Let’s face it—veterinary bills don’t come cheap. At some point, most of us have sat and wondered what would happen if we couldn’t afford a monster vet bill sometime in the future. Having a good pet insurance plan is one of the ways many pet parents combat or at least reduce worries about potential veterinary fees should their pet become sick or injured.

In this post, we’ll be exploring Allstate pet insurance—which offers insurance plans via insurance provider Embrace—and how much it costs depending on various factors.

The Importance of Pet Insurance

However healthy our pets are, sometimes, the unexpected happens. When a pet gets sick or suffers an injury, the vet bills typically aren’t a one-time thing—they can really add up over time for different treatments and surgeries. For this reason, some pet parents decide to go for an insurance plan to help ease worries about the potential financial strain.

In addition to getting reimbursed for major treatments, another benefit of pet insurance is that it often covers other situations we don’t often bargain for, like MRI scans, X-rays, and special tests your pet may need. Some insurance providers also cover dental fees like tooth extraction, gingivitis treatment, and root canals and crowns.

How Much Does Allstate Pet Insurance Cost?

Allstate offers pet insurance plans via Embrace. In short, Allstate pet insurance via Embrace typically costs between $30 and $50 per month. However, this varies depending on a variety of factors, including location, breed, age, and, of course, the kind of pet you have.

To get a clearer picture of how much Allstate costs for different species and breeds, we got some quotes. The table below shows our findings.

Please note that you can choose your own annual reimbursement limit, which ranges from $5,000 to $30,000. You can also choose an annual deductive ranging from $200 to $1,000 and a reimbursement percentage between 70% and 90%. For our research, we went with the most popular options for each query.

Species Breed Age Cost Per Month
Dog Labrador Retriever 5 years $57.70
Dog Labrador Retriever 6 weeks–12 months $38.17
Dog Labrador Retriever 10 years $68.33

Additional Costs to Anticipate

Comprehensive pet insurance plans tend to cover your pet in the event of accidents and illnesses, but what about routine care?

Allstate offers a wellness rewards plan via Embrace as a separate plan option. This wellness plan reimburses you for routine care, including nail clipping, wellness exams, vaccinations, microchipping, teeth cleaning, and grooming. There are various levels of reimbursement, so you can choose one that works for you. Each year you are not reimbursed, you receive a $50 discount.

How Often Should I Take My Pet to the Vet?

If your pet is healthy and happy, an annual vet checkup just to make sure everything is ticking along nicely is a good rule of thumb. If your pet is older than 7 years, it’s recommended to up this to twice a year.

Kittens and puppies also need to visit the vet more frequently for their vaccinations, which typically take place every few weeks until around 16 weeks. If you’re the proud parent of a new puppy or kitten, please contact your vet to schedule vaccinations.

Does Pet Insurance Cover Pre-Existing Conditions?

As a rule, standard pet insurance plans do not cover pre-existing conditions. That said, Allstate’s insurance plan provider, Embrace, does offer a bit of leeway here. As per its policy, if your pet was affected by certain curable conditions (i.e. respiratory, bladder, urinary, gastrointestinal infections, etc.) prior to the start of the policy, these will be excluded from coverage for 12 months only.

Unfortunately, if your pet was diagnosed with incurable pre-existing conditions such as cancer prior to the commencement of the plan, these conditions will be permanently excluded from coverage. Please contact Allstate or Embrace for more information on this.

What To Do for Your Pet Between Vet Visits?

Apart from giving your pet plenty of cuddles, it’s also a good idea to:

  • Make sure they’re getting all the nutrients they need—a high-quality commercial diet should be just fine.
  • Make sure they’re getting enough exercise and mental stimulation (toys, play, walks, etc.).
  • Groom their coat regularly.
  • Trim their toenails regularly.
  • Clean their teeth regularly.
  • Keep an eye on their weight.
  • Keep an eye out for any changes in your pet.
