The Amazing Doberman Pinscher

The Doberman was bred by a tax collector in Germany during the 19th century. During these times the tax collector was not a welcome sight. In hopes of keeping himself safe while on the job, a tax collector and dog breeder by the name of Louis Dobermann decided he wanted a dog that was large and imposing. The result, which included the black and tan terrier, German Pinscher, Rottweiler, and smooth-coated herding dogs, was a larger version of the Doberman Pinscher you know today.

The reputation of the Doberman grew quickly. They became known as royalty in the world of working-class dogs. Since then, they have worked with the police, been used as therapy dogs, worked as service dogs, been part of search and rescue missions, and have excelled in the competitive sports ring. They have even been to war. Their muscular bodies, imposing stature, and loyalty to their owners make these dogs ideal when it comes to protection for their owners and families.

Why Dobermans Make Great Running Companions

While the Dobermans may normally be used to send threats running in fear, they are also highly energetic dogs. When it comes to their owners, they are great companions. In fact, Dobermans are affectionate, loving, and very sweet when it comes to spending time with their families. It’s the energy and power they possess that make them an ideal breed for running.

The Doberman is also considered a fast dog breed. They can run with you for up to 5 miles at a time. They can also reach top speeds of 35 MPH. Many believe them to be second to only the Greyhound in terms of speediest breeds. The muscular build and sleek body of this dog breed make them ideal for life as a companion to runners.

When Can My Doberman Start Running with Me?

If you choose a Doberman as your puppy and running partner, it only makes sense that you’d want to get your pup out there as soon as possible. Unfortunately, that’s not the best course of action. A Doberman isn’t considered fully developed until they are between 18 months of age and 2 years old. If you attempt to run your dog too hard, too early, you can easily damage their growing bodies and cause injuries.

When the time is right, here are a few tips that can make running with your Doberman beneficial to both of you.

Top 4 Tips for Running With Your Doberman

1. Introduce Running Slowly

You can’t expect your Doberman to take off on a 5-mile run on their first day out. Instead, you should start slowly. Take the time to teach your dog the commands you expect them to follow when you’re running. Once you feel they are responding well, start with walks then increase to a light jog. If things continue to go well then you can work your way up.

2. Keep a Close Eye on Your Dog

As you and your Doberman run together more, you’ll be able to read your dog’s mannerisms. Dobermans are energetic working dogs. They may overexert themselves. It’s up to you to take note of this. If you see your dog slowing down, whimpering, or showing other signs of exhaustion it’s time to take them home for a bit of rest.

3. Keep It Positive

Always praise your dog when you’re out on a run. The last thing you want is for your dog to think they are being punished by being forced to run. If you ensure they are having fun, they will want to continue this activity with you.

4. Don’t Choose a Doberman Just for Running

While the idea of choosing a dog breed that makes a great running partner is appealing, don’t make that your only criterion when it comes to choosing a new dog. The Doberman Pinscher is a proud, noble dog breed. Yes, they do amazing when it comes to running and exercising but there is more to these dogs than that. A Doberman is a people-oriented dog. They need love and attention from their owners. They love to be praised and will keep you happy and protected in return. Having an athletic running partner that can keep up with your longest runs is just a bonus.
