Commonly described as “hen fever,” people from all over couldn’t get enough of these exquisite animals. Cochin chickens come in a variety of colors, including black, silver cinnamon, white, silver buff, lemon, grouse, buff, and partridge. They are bred principally for exhibition purposes.

Nankin chickens have Southeastern Asian origins and are one of the oldest bantam chicken breeds. These friendly birds are listed as “critical” on the Livestock Conservancy’s endangered chicken breed list and many poultry fanciers had to have Nankin hens incubate the eggs of game birds to keep the breed from disappearing altogether. Boasting golden feathers and slate blue legs, the Nankin chicken is a true show stopper.

5. Serama

Also called the Malaysian Serama, this bantam breed was recently developed in Malaysia within the last 50 years. First exhibited in 1990, the Serama breed was hit hard by the 2004 bird flu epidemic. These birds often compete in beauty contests and are judged by size, shape, and temperament. The Serama chicken has a full breast, upright posture, and is often described as an “archangel chicken” because of this human-like appearance.

6. Silkie
