Protein to Carbohydrate Ratio
Cats are obligate carnivores which means that their primary food source has to be animal proteins. Obligate carnivores’ stomachs do not have the enzymes needed to break down carotene, a chief source of nutrients in plant matter. As such, cat food needs to be made up primarily of animal protein sources. Protein should be no less than 30% of your cat’s food content.
In addition, carbohydrates are a great source of quick energy, but they don’t keep your cat full for as long as protein sources. Carbohydrate content is often sourced from low-quality and species inappropriate sources. Your cat’s food should have no more than 20-25% carbohydrate content.
