The 9 Best Rabbit Hutches:
1. Trixie Small Rabbit Hutch – Best Overall
At the top of our list is the Trixie Small Animal Hutch. This hutch comes complete with an outdoor run and would work for guinea pigs and rabbits. Two of the most important factors to consider when purchasing a rabbit hutch are safety and space. You want to make sure your rabbit has plenty of space to move, play, eat, and sleep and that they are protected from other creatures. The Trixie provides a perfect balance between all of these things.
The glazed pine finish provides a nice finishing touch and makes this hutch virtually maintenance-free for several years. When you need to get into the hutch, you have access from the roof, and above the run are with a hinged door.
The ramp is a unique non-slip ramp that will give your rabbit easy access to the upper level of the hutch. The ramp will also provide some exercise as the rabbit travels up and down the two stories. Even with all of these benefits and space, the Trixie Small Animal Hutch is still offered at a very fair price.
All in all, we think that this is the best rabbit hutch of 2021.
2. Petsfit Wooden Rabbit Hutch – Best Value
If the Trixie Small Animal Hutch was still priced a bit high for you, the Petsfit Wooden Rabbit Hutch could be a great hit. This is the best rabbit hutch for the money. Although this model is a little smaller than the Trixie, it still has some great features that you and your rabbit will benefit from.
The Petsfit is a two-story hutch, basically a bedroom and a playroom. There are two rather large areas that your rabbit will be able to both play and sleep. There is both top and front access when you need to clean or tend to your bunny. Our favorite feature of the Petsfit is the removable floor that makes it very easy to clean this hutch.
You will need to do some assembly to this model when you receive it, but the holes are all predrilled, and it was not a complicated design to work with. Some rabbit owners struggled with the quality of the parts in this hutch; this is very likely related to the selling price.
3. Merry Tudor Decorative Rabbit Hutch – Premium Choice
Now that we gave you the best value buys out there, it’s time to go to the opposite end of the spectrum. The Merry Products Tudor Decorative Rabbit Hutch is a premium choice, but it is one of the nicest-looking rabbit hutches you will find. If the look and design of a rabbit hutch matter to you, this will be a great option.
The Merry Products hutch is designed to look like a 16th century Tudor-style building. The detail on the outside design of this hutch is excellent, and the inside is quite impressive as well. There is both sleeping space and room to play with this hutch. Again, the Merry Products Rabbit Hutch has a removable tray for easy cleaning. You won’t have any trouble accessing the hutch or the bunnies. At the very top of the rabbit, the hutch has a small storage area where you can keep some of the essentials you use to care for your rabbit.
Of course, all of these great features come at a premium. This is a more expensive model, and unfortunately, the individual pieces are not as high quality as we would have liked. Paying more for a product that is well made and will stand up over time is easy for most rabbit owners to justify. However, paying more for a product that looks great but is still made with less than perfect materials is a problem.
4. Trixie Natura Rabbit Hutch
The Trixie Natura Rabbit Hutch is next on our list. This hutch is medium-sized, and the run area is not as large as our top choice. However, there are some excellent benefits for this particular model.
For starters, this hutch has the same glazed pine finish that our top pick has, making it a nice-looking and easy-maintenance hutch. When it comes to cleaning out the Trixie Natura, there is a pull-out plastic tray that is easy to use and clean. This model also comes with a non-slip ramp to help your rabbits travel between levels, and it is an excellent way for them to get a bit of exercise and movement. This hutch has three doors and a metal slide latch.
With all these benefits, you are probably wondering why it is fourth on our list. The problem with the Trixie Natura is that it is a bit small if you have more than one rabbit. Another issue reported with it is that it can be a bit tricky to put together. The combination of those two factors bumped this model down a few spots on our list.
5. Pawhut Wooden Rabbit Hutches
Next on our list is the Pawhut D2-0049. This is a large two-story design that has multiple levels and a ramp between the levels. We like the two-story designs to give the rabbit a bit more of an exciting home.
The Pawhut design is easy to access with three easy-to-open doors and removable pull-out trays for easy cleaning. The wireframe on the outside of this hutch is sturdy and should keep your rabbits safe. There are, however, a few flaws that brought the Pawhut down to number five on our list.
The biggest issue is that it is tough to assemble. It seemed as though some parts didn’t match up properly, and it took a bit of creativity to get the rabbit hutch up and functioning. The ramp-up to the hutch is a bit steep, and you may have a hard time convincing some rabbits to venture up or down the ramp.
The Pawhut is a bit more expensive than some of the other choices, and we had hoped for the price it would be a better build.
6. Good Life Two Floors Waterproof Bunny Hutch
Next on our list is the Good Life Two Floors Waterproof Bunny Hutch. To be honest, this is such a lovely-looking hutch that we had hoped we could rank it a bit higher on our list. This hutch says that it would be suitable for two rabbits or three to four guinea pigs. You would have to have small rabbits for this to work for two to three.
The visibility with this hutch is really good, and you can watch your rabbits play without too many blind spots. Although we love the concept of the roofs over the hutch and how great it is to keep water out, it also makes it quite dark. If your rabbit hutch is located in a shaded or dark area, it may end up being pitch black inside for your rabbits.
Another complaint we had with this particular hutch was the amount of bedding that falls out the sides. As a rabbit owner, you know that the area around the hutch is always going to get a bit messy. The Good Life Two Floor seems to drop too much out the sides.
7. CO-Z Weatherproof Indoor Bunny Rabbit Hutch
The CO-Z RHC5142 Weatherproof IndoorWooden Bunny Rabbit Hutch is a nice-looking pet house that is designed to stand up to all weather conditions. This compact design is built almost like stackable cages so you can fit them into a smaller area. There is a removable ladder between levels that you can put in or take out depending on if you want the rabbits in the hutch to interact.
The primary issue we have with the CO-Z is that it is made with cheap parts. There are many instances where rabbits started eating through the wood of the hutch. As a rabbit owner, you may know that this is quite common with rabbits, but usually, a hutch can withstand a bit of chewing.
The wood on this seems to be too thin and allows the rabbits to do some severe damage over time.
8. Best Choice Outdoor Wooden Pet Rabbit Hutch
The Best Choice Outdoor Wooden Pet Rabbit Hutch is almost the same design as the CO-Z featured in our previous review. This rabbit hutch is made with fir wood and will work for other animals as well as rabbits. There are a living area and a sleeping area with two sliding pans for easy cleaning. The fir wood ramp is an anti-slip ramp that will help rabbits get up and down without slipping. Easy access through the caged doors on each level makes reaching your animals quite simple.
The problem we have with this particular design is again the quality. The fir wood on this hutch splits very quickly, for some disappointed rabbit owners, it split while putting it together. In addition to the fact that this is not a high-quality design, it is costly. The Best Choice Rabbit Hutch is almost double the price of our overall best rabbit hutch choice, and we seriously can’t figure out why. Save yourself a bit of money and buy something higher quality for less money.
9. Kaytee Rabbit Hutches
Last on our list is the Kaytee 100503685 Rabbit Hutch. This two-story hutch was made with some deluxe features, and it is large enough to house a few rabbits. There are multiple access doors, a pull-out tray, and locks to keep your rabbits safe. The Kaytee has a bit more of a dark wood finish to it than other models, which makes it look quite nice. With all these positives, you may be wondering what puts it down towards the bottom of our list.
Unfortunately, the bottom of this hutch is made of wood without a plastic tray on it. The rabbit urine seeps through, and there is no way to get rid of that smell. Another problem is that this hutch is challenging to put together, and there are many reports of missing pieces. Lastly, as we have seen with other models, the ramp is just a bit too steep and can cause some trouble for your rabbits. Overall, there are better options on our list than the Kaytee Rabbit Hutch.
Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Best Rabbit Hutch
Now that you have seen the good, bad, and the ugly when it comes to the rabbit hutch choices on the market, it’s time to narrow down which one makes the most sense for you. Although there are a lot of factors that go into choosing the best hutch, the essential things to remember are the health and the safety of your rabbits. Here are some other critical things to consider that will help you choose the best rabbit hutch:
Rabbit hutches are meant to keep your rabbits inside and to keep predators out. This is their most basic function, and if you have any doubts as to the safety of the hutch you are purchasing, cross it off your list. You will want to make sure that your pen has easy access for you but not so easy for other people or animals. Having a lock on the hutch is a great feature, even if the pen does not come with a lock, the ability to add one is essential.
The pricing on rabbit hutches will vary. If you want something that has a run and a sleeping area, it tends to get a bit more expensive. Also, the rabbit hutches that look like they could be a small hotel for people to stay in will cost more money. If you are paying more for a hutch because it is built with quality products, we would say you are making the right decision. If you are paying a substantial amount for a product that is low quality but looks fancy in your yard, you may want to reconsider.
Many rabbit hutches are sold as being two or even three levels. The levels can be helpful if you need to separate rabbits or just to give them some additional space to move around. The one thing to be sure of when purchasing a leveled rabbit hutch is the ramp that rabbits will use as a go-between. Ramps will come at different angles, and some will be anti-slip; some will not. A steep ramp without any anti-slip features will end up working more like a slide than a slope, and your rabbit could end up getting hurt. In addition to the possibility of injury, you could be left with a situation where your rabbit is not capable of climbing up the ramp to get to the other levels.
An easy clean tray is almost a necessity in a rabbit hutch. You do not want to have to clean out the entire hutch each day. Sliding a tray your cleaning it and sliding it back in is a much simpler process. One thing to look out for is any type of wood area that is left exposed without a tray. As we mentioned with the Kaytee model, there is a problem with urine leaking through the wood to the lower levels. This will be a mess to clean up, and in all honesty, the smell will likely never go away.
Number of Rabbits
Be very careful that you choose a hutch that is big enough for the type and quantity of rabbits you have. Since rabbits come in so many different breeds and sizes, most hutch will not recommend if they are for one rabbit or several. You will need to make this determination yourself. If you have multiple rabbits, you will likely need many hutches or hutches that can connect to build a larger rabbit house.
Check the dimensions on all units before ordering. You should lay out an area in your home or yard where you will place the hutch, make sure the space is adequate. Our top choice, the Trixie Small Animal Hutch, is going to be a little longer than some of the other stackable units. This is because it has that excellent run area for the rabbits. If you have a tight space, you will likely need a narrow tall unit.
Are you going to be putting your rabbit hutch indoors or outdoors? Some rabbit hutches are built to be placed outside and are made with all-weather materials. They will likely have roof-type shingles on the top to keep the rain and elements out of the hutch. You can use a hutch like this indoors as well, although it may not be necessary. For indoor hutches, it’s crucial to have excellent ventilation and light. The light inside may not be as intense as it is outdoors, and you don’t want your rabbits to have to sit in a dark hutch.
Buying a new home for your rabbits should be fun and exciting. As a rabbit owner, there is nothing better than to see your animals happy, safe, and comfortable. The Trixie Small Animal Hutch is the best option we could find for a great rabbit hutch. This particular model is priced well, gives your rabbit a ton of space to play and sleep, and will keep them protected from predators and the outside elements as well.
If, for some reason, the Trixie is a bit more money than you would like to spend then the Petsfit Wooden Rabbit Hutch could be a great choice. Although this model does not have as much room for the rabbits to run freely, there is a significant price difference between the two models. The Petsfit does provide a safe and easy to clean home for your rabbits at a great price. Hopefully, these reviews helped you to find the best rabbit hutch for your home.
