Cucumber Feeding Suggestions for Your Guinea Pig

Your guinea pigs will likely be happy to pig out on a whole cucumber, but younger and older pets might find it inconvenient to break through the skin with their teeth. So, consider one of the following serving suggestions when it comes time to feed cucumbers to your guinea pig:

  • Cut Up Some Cubes– Simply cut a cucumber up into cubes, leaving the skin and seeds intact so your little guy or gal can decide what to eat and what to leave.
  • Use a Spiralizer – You can spiralize a cucumber and turn it into “noodles” that your guinea pig can crawl on like a nest and break apart to eat as they see fit.
  • Put Pieces Into Toys – Fill an interactive toy up for your pet to play with while spending time alone in their enclosed habitat.

You can even use cucumbers as treats and train your guinea pig to come when you call them, as well as a variety of other fun tricks!

Are Other Human Foods Safe to Feed Guinea Pigs?

While hay, alfalfa, and pelleted food, along with vitamin C supplementation if necessary, should be your guinea pig’s main source of nutrients, there are a variety of different veggies that you can supplement your guinea pig’s diet with for enhanced enjoyment at snack time and optimal health overall. But keep in mind that any snacks you feed your guinea pig should be just that and should never make up a large part of your pet’s diet. Here are a few snack options to consider in addition to cucumbers:

Broccoli It’s rich in vitamin C, fiber, minerals, and other nutrients that are good for guinea pigs. This veggie is also fun for guinea pigs to crunch on. But when overfed, broccoli can cause problems due to its oxalate content.
Carrots – They contain essential nutrients that guinea pigs need to thrive. However, they should be served in limited amounts only a few times a week.
Cabbage – Small portions of cabbage will give your guinea pig something to do while providing them with a little extra vitamin C – especially the darker varieties.

These are just a few of the vegetables that you can have fun feeding to your guinea pig. Experiment and see what your furry pet seems to enjoy the most.
