How Much Should I Feed My Corgi? Feeding Guide

Most Corgis love to eat. They’re food driven, and there’s nothing wrong with that! But while you’ll never have to question how to motivate your corgi, one thing you might have to worry about is their overeating.

Corgis always want to eat, but you don’t want them eating more than they should. Of course, you don’t want to cut off their food supply if they need more either. It’s a fine line, and we’ll help you figure out the right amount to feed your Corgi for every meal.

Corgi Feeding Guide

Important Note: The amount of calories each dog needs for healthy growth and development depends on many factors, including their age, breed, and activity level. These charts are general guidelines for healthy young dogs, but we recommend confirming any changes you make to your dogs diet with your vet.

How Much Dry Kibble Should I Feed My Corgi?

If you’re feeding your Corgi dry dog food, you can typically expect to feed them between 1.75 and 2 cups of food each day. This means if you purchase a 30-pound bag of dog food for your corgi, you can expect to need a new bag after 60 to 68 days.

Depending on the brand you go with, you can expect to spend between $300 and $500 a year to feed your Corgi with dry kibble.

How Much Wet Food Should I Feed My Corgi?

If you choose to feed your Corgi with wet food instead of dry food, you will typically use between two and three 12.5 cans of food each day. Once again, this depends on the brand of food you go with the weight of your corgi, but between two and three cans is a pretty standard amount.

Depending on the wet food brand you go with, you can expect to spend between $1,700 and $3,000 a year to feed your Corgi with wet food.

How Much Fresh Food Should I Feed My Corgi?

This diet is the one that varies the most depending on what you put in it. Still, you can expect to feed an adult Corgi about 1 pound of fresh dog food daily. But it’s important to note that this amount will vary quite a bit, depending on what’s in the specific fresh food recipe.

Still, with most fresh food recipes you can expect to spend between $1,900 and $2,500 a year to feed your Corgi with fresh food.

How Much Should You Feed a Corgi Puppy?

If your Corgi is still a puppy, we recommend getting a puppy-specific diet for them. These diets have higher protein content and other things a puppy needs to grow happy and healthy! Moreover, they will typically recommend just how much to feed them while they’re growing.

However, if you’re sticking with regular dry kibble, we recommend starting with a cup of food each day and slowly working it up in quarter-cup increments until your Corgi reaches their full size.

The same principles apply to wet and fresh foods, but most fresh food brands will adjust the recipe to the information you put in for your puppy making it especially easy for you!

Top 3 Factors That Affect How Much to Feed Your Corgi

While our guide is a great way to get a general idea of how much to feed your corgi, a few different factors can impact exactly how much you should feed them. We’ve highlighted three of the most important factors for you here:

1. Weight

While a Corgi will typically weigh between 25 and 30 pounds, that’s still a 5-pound gap between the smallest and largest Corgis. Five pounds might not seem like much, but that’s an 18% difference in size!

For dry dog food, those 5 pounds can mean the difference between feeding your Corgi 1.75 cups or 2 cups a day.

2. Activity Level

Let’s face it, some dogs are just more active than others. If your Corgi likes to spend their day lounging around the couch, there’s nothing wrong with it. But if that’s the case, they don’t need as much food as a Corgi that spends their day chasing bunnies around the yard non-stop.

Try to get a gauge on your pup’s activity level and make quarter-cup adjustments to their diet until you find the right amount to feed them.

3. Brand of Dog Food

Each dog food brand has their own recipe, and while they’re typically pretty similar, sometimes it can result in slightly different feeding instructions. It might not seem like much, but for a dog the size of a corgi, a ¼ or ½ cup of dog food difference a day can significantly impact their overall health.

Final Thoughts

When you’re trying to figure out how much to feed your Corgi, make the adjustments slowly. Make small adjustments at a time until you find the right balance for them. Once you figure it out, leave their diet alone and enjoy your time together!
