Huacaya Alpaca Origins
The Huacaya is one of the two different breeds of alpaca. They’re endemic to the Andes Mountains in Peru, naturally living at an altitude of 4,000 feet above sea level. They have an exceptional climate tolerance that makes them highly adaptable to just about any climate.
Huacaya alpacas are more common than the Suri Alpaca by far. It’s thought that 90% of the worldwide alpaca population is made up of Huacaya. Alpacas, in general, are often mistaken for llamas since they look similar. However, alpacas and llamas are entirely different species of animals.
Huacaya Alpaca Characteristics
Huacaya alpacas are intelligent, gentle, and curious, but they can be rather shy animals. They have springy, coiled hair that spins into tough, durable wool. Their hair and wool are lighter than that of a sheep.
Uses
Huacaya alpaca are almost exclusively bred for wool. While their meat is edible, they’re rarely used for meat and rarely bred for slaughter. Their wool is slightly less durable than that of the Suri alpaca.
