If you’re the proud owner of one or more beautiful cats, dealing with litter boxes and the contents within can be a daily headache. The odor is one particularly frustrating aspect, so this is where using a litter disposal system can come in handy.

Two well-known companies with litter disposal systems are Litter Champ and Litter Genie. They both offer similar systems, so here, we put them head-to-head to see which is the better option.

We look at the basic systems, which are the most popular, as well as a few of the other models from these companies. Hopefully, in the end, you’ll have a much clearer idea of which litter disposal system you should invest in.

Brief History of Litter Genie

Litter Genie XL Pail, Ultimate Cat Litter Disposal System

Litter Genie is a brand from the Angelcare company, which was established in 1997 in Montréal, Quebec, Canada. It started with products for parents with babies and young children, which in 2005, included the Diaper Genie line.

This system proved so popular that it eventually led to the LitterLocker, the first cat litter disposal system designed for Canadian cat owners. Playtex acquired the LitterLocker concept and launched the Litter Genie system for the U.S. market.

In 2019, Playtex sold the Litter Genie brand (and a few other non-pet-related brands) to Angelcare, which opened up infant and pet care products for the U.S. Angelcare now sells its products to more than 50 countries.

Litter Champ Product Line

Litter Champ has the cat litter disposal system, which is what we are focusing on in this review. But it also carries a few other pet-related products.

Litter Champ Refill Liner

When using the Litter Champ system, you’ll need to stock up on liners. Once you’ve installed them, you’ll have at least 10 weeks’ worth of liners. They come in scented and unscented.

Litter Champ Litter Pan

This product is exactly what it sounds like, a litter box for cats. It has high sides and back and a low front entry for any kittens or cats with arthritis or mobility issues. It’s gray in color and has a sleek, modern appearance.

Training Champ

If you also have a dog, Training Champ uses the same idea as the Litter Champ, but for dog waste. You can toss training pads, doggy diapers, or poo bags into the Training Champ, which locks away odors until it’s time to empty it. Also, like the Litter Champ, it has a foot pedal for easy opening and a continuous and eco-friendly liner.

Dooty Champ

Dooty Champ is just basically waste bags for any of your pets. They are tear resistant, leak proof, and quite strong. They are also large enough to contain waste of all kinds.

Litter Genie Product Line

While Litter Champ specializes in pet waste disposal, Litter Genie’s company specializes in several infant products and a few litter-related items.

LitterLocker

LitterLocker includes waste disposal systems, refills, and litter boxes. There are two waste disposal systems that are slightly different in color, but you can also purchase fabric “sleeves” that add a decorative touch to the pails.

There are also two different colored litter boxes that are bucket shaped with handles and are available with or without a scoop.

Litter Genie

Litter Genie has the Easy Roll, Litter Genie Pail, Litter Genie Plus Pail, and Litter Genie XL Pail, which are all waste disposal systems.

There’s also a litter box, which is quite similar to the LitterLocker’s bucket-style litter boxes, as well as standard liner refills.

Litter Champ vs Litter Genie: Price

The price of either product does depend on which system you look at. However, as of writing, Litter Champ only offers one waste disposal system, which is more expensive than all Litter Genie’s systems except one. Litter Genie has three systems that are all priced lower than Litter Champ’s.

Litter Champ

Since Litter Champ only offers one system, it doesn’t have any premium or budget products. What it does offer are the fabric sleeves. You can purchase these separately, and they add a little panache to the plain pails. You can cover the ordinary gray pail with a wood design, cat pawprints, and a few other patterns.

Litter Genie

Litter Genie offers four different waste disposal systems. What could be considered the budget pail would be the basic Litter Genie Pail. The most expensive or premium system is the Litter Genie Easy Roll Pail. The liner refills tend to be pricier than Litter Champ’s, but they should last longer.

Litter Champ vs. Litter Genie: Warranty

Litter Champ

Litter Champ offers an excellent 5-year warranty. You fill in their online registration form, with one form for each product. However, it doesn’t say what happens or how the warranty process works if you run into problems.

Litter Genie

We couldn’t find any warranty information for Litter Genie. If you plan on buying this product, try contacting customer service before purchasing.

Litter Champ vs. Litter Genie: Customer Service

Litter Champ

Litter Champ offers multiple ways to get in touch with customer service. It has a 1-800 number, email address, online form, and social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

However, since Litter Champ only sells its products through external retailers, it’s difficult to judge how its own customer service ranks. While you have the option of contacting Litter Champ’s representatives, if you have a problem with the system, you will need to talk to the retailer that sold it to you.

Litter Genie

Litter Genie has the same customer service situation as Litter Champ. You can contact Litter Genie through social media, including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. However, we couldn’t find an email address, online form, or phone number. The only method of contact appears to be through social media.

Like Litter Champ, Litter Genie sells its products through retailers. If you have questions or concerns, contact the retailer that you bought it from.

Head-to-Head: Litter Champ Cat Litter Disposal vs Litter Genie Plus

Litter Champ only has one system available, which has been labeled as “premium.” In contrast, Litter Genie has four different models, so we chose the one closest to the premium Champ model.

The Genie Plus measures 17” H x 8.5” W x 8.5” L compared to Champ at 19.25” H x 9” W x 10” L. Litter Champ comes with a scoop, as does the Genie, and the liners work the same way. You refill them, cut the bag when it’s time to take out the waste, put in the refill, and tie the bottom of the bag closed.

One advantage of the Champ over Litter Genie is that it has a step-on pedal, like what you get with many kitchen garbage cans. This means you can deal with the waste and open the pail without using your hands.

The Litter Genie requires extra work by opening the lid, pulling a handle to open it, dumping in the litter, and closing the handle. But this is also what keeps the odor from escaping. The Litter Champ is more expensive and is bigger overall.

  • Our Verdict: Litter Champ might be more expensive but is easier to use.

Head-to-Head: Litter Champ Refill Liners vs. Litter Genie Standard Refill Liners

Litter Genie and Litter Champ have liners that are relatively equal in price, but you get more liners with Litter Champ. For a package of three refills of Litter Genie, you get 42 feet, and Litter Champ gives you 63 feet for a little less. Litter Champ also claims that its bags are made with 20% recyclable material and is 100% biodegradable.

  • Our Verdict: Litter Champ wins here. You get more liners for less money, and they are more environmentally friendly.

Overall Brand Reputation

Performance

  • Edge: Litter Champ

Litter Champ is easier to use due to the foot pedal. When you’re dealing with waste, it’s handy to have your hands free instead of needing to hold the lid open. Also, Litter Champ is larger, so it won’t need changing quite as often.

Price

  • Edge: Litter Genie

Litter Genie has more products to choose from and three of the systems are less expensive than Litter Champ.

Odor Control

  • Edge: Litter Genie

Both systems do an excellent job at odor control, but Litter Genie has the edge because of the handle system. When the waste is dropped in, you push the handle closed, so between that and the lid locking in place, it does keep the odor contained.

Design

  • Edge: Litter Champ

Both brands have a similar design, but if you can get one of the fabric sleeves for the Litter Champ, it can give it an attractive look.

Conclusion

Overall, both the Litter Genie and the Litter Champ are quite similar. The Litter Genie gives you more options, and there are more sizes to choose from. So, if you need something that doesn’t take up much space, the Litter Genie might be your best bet.

But the Litter Champ is easier to use overall, particularly due to the foot pedal. Once you’ve purchased it, the refillable liners also give you more bang for the buck.

Our final verdict is that if you’re on the lookout for a waste disposal system for cat litter, the Litter Champ wins by a whisker.
