Pets are a part of the family for many households, and this is especially true in the Philippines where two-thirds of households own a dog and more than four in 10 households own a cat. The number of pet owners increased during 2020 and 2021, with the increase also bringing an increase in the size of the pet market in the country. Experts forecast that growth will continue; although, it is likely to slow now that people have been allowed back to work and to continue with some semblance of normal daily life.

1. The global pet care industry is worth more than $200 billion.

(Fortune Business Insights)

Owners love their pets, whether they are dogs, cats, or tarantulas, and every pet needs food, bedding, and other supplies. Such is the love we hold for pets that the global pet care industry is worth an estimated $200 billion! The global pandemic led more people to buy or adopt pets, and as people couldn’t leave their house to spend money, they seemingly spent it on their animals with Fortune Business Insights estimating a 28% increase in the value of the global market.

2. The global pet care industry is forecasted to be worth $325 billion by 2028.

(Fortune Business Insights)

The year 2020 saw a huge increase in the global market as a result of COVID-19, and the increased number of people that have become pet owners means that spending will continue, although the increase in owners will slow as people return to work and everyday life. In any case, it is expected that global revenue for the pet care industry, including food, supplements, toys, and other items, will reach $325 billion by 2028.

Pet Ownership in the Philippines

3. There are approximately 11 million pet dogs.

(FCI)

Like much of the world, the Philippines is obsessed with dogs over all other pets, and, while it is impossible to calculate the precise number of dogs in the country, according to the Federation Cynologique Internationale, the country’s kennel club, there are an estimated 11 million pet dogs.

This figure is based on the number of purebred dogs registered with the studbook and extrapolated to include mixed breed and unregistered dogs across the whole population. The group also estimates that these 11 million dogs are owned by 12 million owners with the discrepancy being attributable to the fact that some dogs are owned by more than one person.

4. Two-thirds of Filipino households own a dog.

(Rakuten)

The Philippines has the highest rate of dog ownership, as a ratio of total households, in the Asia Pacific region. A massive 67% of households own at least one dog. For comparison, the country with the next highest figure is Vietnam where 53% of households own a dog. Indonesia has the lowest figures, with 10% of households having at least one canine family member.

5. 43% of households own a cat.

(Rakuten)

Again, in keeping with the rest of the world and the region, the next most popular pet in the Philippines is the cat. About 43% of households own at least one. While this is only the second-highest rate, Indonesia’s 47% ownership isn’t much further ahead. The lowest figure for cats belongs to South Korea where only 9% of the country’s households have a feline companion.

6. Other popular pets include fish and birds.

(Rakuten)

After dogs and cats, Filipinos are most likely to own fish or birds with 13% and 10% of households reporting owning these animals respectively. These figures are comparatively lower than most other Asian-Pacific countries. In Indonesia, for example, 18% of households own a bird, while 24% of households in Vietnam keep fish.

10. The US is the largest exporter of pet food to the Philippines.

(Petfair)

The US is the world’s largest exporter of pet food to the Philippines, although there is also a large demand for low-cost locally manufactured food. The US holds approximately a 61% market share, however, and has been the largest exporter for the past ten years.

11. Pedigree, Royal Canin, and Alpo are the leading pet food brands.

(Petfair)

Some of the most popular individual brands on the market are Pedigree, Royal Canin, and Alpo. These are considered premium brands and carry a premium price tag. Some of the most popular lower-cost options are Beef Pro, which costs $1.82 per kilogram, and Special Dog at $1.85 per kilogram. Leading manufacturer Purina says that it believes Filipinos are increasingly happy to pay premium prices for premium foods, so this area could be set for growth in the coming years.

12. Across its various brands, Mars is the market leader in pet food retail.

(Petfair)

Mars may not be the first name that springs to mind when it comes to pet food manufacturers, but their pet food brands include Pedigree, Cesar, Chappi, Kitekat, James Wellbeloved, Royal Canin, Sheba, Whiskas, and more. Their combination of cat and dog foods, and wet and dry foods, means that they sell significant amounts of pet food in the Philippines market, and they will continue to do so for some years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Philippines’ Pet Industry

What Country Spends the Most on Pets?

When it comes to expenditure per capita, US citizens clearly have the biggest pockets. They spend an average of more than $160 per person on their pets. The UK has the second highest amount, but still falls some way behind the US, spending $93 per person per annum. In the Philippines, where average earnings are much lower, the average person spends $1.10 per annum. (Statista 2)

What Is the Most Popular Pet in the Philippines?

It is difficult to say which type of pet has the highest population in the Philippines. It is known that 67% of households own at least one dog and 43% own at least one cat with 10% owning birds and 13% owning fish. Some fish and bird owners may keep dozens of these pets, but it still seems like the most populous pet is the dog.

What Is the Aspin Dog?

Aspin comes from the words “Aso” and “Pinoy” and really just means “Filipino Dogs.” These dogs tend to be medium sized and are essentially street dogs. Only a few people choose to keep the breed as pets because they are more often considered strays and wild dogs. They often end up in shelters, but they are intelligent, can be trained, and are easy to look after if trained from an early age. (Inquirer)

What Pets Can You Have in the Philippines?

There are no restricted dog breeds in the Philippines, unlike in a lot of other countries. You can also keep cats, and most regular pets are legally available for purchase in the country. However, there are restrictions on animals imported into the country, which require a permit and a health check, while exotic pets require a special license and must undergo health checks. The licensing of exotic pets has been a legal requirement since the introduction of the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001 was introduced. (ENN)

How Many Pet Owners Are There in the Philippines?

It is difficult to know exactly how many pet owners there are in the country because many households will own two or more different types of pet and multiple numbers of each pet, which skews the figures. However, we do know that there are 11.6 million dog owners in the country.

In Conclusion

Pets are as popular in the Philippines as they are in the rest of the world, arguably even more so. In fact, dogs are much more popular. While 67% of households in the Philippines own a dog, only around 40% of US households have at least one canine family member, for example.

The pandemic saw many more people buy and care for dogs and cats, as was witnessed in countries across the world, and there is expected to be continued growth in the Philippine pet food and pet care market as a result of the increase in numbers of pets.
