  • The 10 Best Pet Insurance Providers in Nevada

    1. Lemonade Pet Insurance – Best Overall

    Lemonade logo

We’ve chosen Lemonade Pet Insurance as the best overall pet insurance provider in Nevada on the basis of its reasonable pricing, short waiting periods for accidents, and variety of preventative care packages, including one designed for puppies and kittens specifically.  The base plan covers your cat or dog for various injuries, conditions, and procedures, including hospitalization and emergency care.

That said, Lemonade’s comprehensive plan does not offer coverage for behavioral issues, physical therapy, dental illnesses, and vet visit fees—you have to select one of the various add-ons to get reimbursement for these. Furthermore, it’s unclear what Lemonade’s age limit for enrollment is.

The plan is customizable and allows you to choose from a range of deductibles (the portion of the vet bill you pay before the insurance company pays), annual limits (the maximum amount you can claim), and reimbursement options. Other Lemonade perks are its short waiting period (2 days) for accidents and its variety of available discounts (i.e. multi-pet, annual discount, etc.).

    Pros
    • Reasonably priced
    • Customizable plan
    • Various discounts available
    • Various routine care packages
    • Quick claim approvals
    • Short accident waiting period

    Cons
    • No vet-visit fee coverage in the base plan

    2. Spot Pet Insurance – Best Value

    spot logo 22

Spot Pet Insurance offers both an accident and illness plan and an accident-only plan, making it an option worth considering for those who aren’t looking for the full package. Its accident and illness plan offers a broad range of coverage, including behavioral issues and dental disease.

Pre-existing conditions are not covered (this is the same with most insurance providers) but Spot does offer a little flexibility if your pet has a curable condition and has been treatment-free and symptom-free for a certain period of time.

When customizing your plan, you have the option to select an unlimited annual limit—not every provider offers this, so it’s a big pro. You can also choose your own deductible and reimbursement rate and add on a preventative care package (choose from gold and platinum). On the downside, Spot’s 14-day waiting period is long in comparison to some providers that offer accident waiting periods as short as 2 days.

    Pros
    • Broad range of coverage
    • Unlimited annual limit option
    • Optional preventative care packages
    • Accident-only plan available
    • Exam fees and behavioral issues covered

    Cons
    • 14-day waiting period for accidents

    3. Pumpkin Pet Insurance

    Pumpkin Pet Insurance Logo

Pumpkin Pet Insurance offers one accident and illness plan that covers a wide range of conditions, injuries, and situations including prescription diets, alternative therapy, dental and gum disease, vet exam fees, dental and gum disease, and even microchipping. The inclusion of microchipping is a major pro as not many providers cover this important procedure.

Another of Pumpkin’s strong points is that its waiting period for orthopedic conditions is 14 days, which is the same as its waiting period for accidents and illnesses. 14 days for orthopedic conditions is much shorter than the standard 6-month waiting period many competitors impose, but the set 14 days means that the waiting period for accidents is long compared to some competitors.

In terms of customizations, you can choose from three annual limits (including unlimited) and deductible options. The reimbursement rate is set at 90% and cannot be changed. There are no upper age limits for enrollment or breed restrictions.

    Pros
    • Excellent coverage
    • Covers microchipping in the base plan
    • No upper age limits for enrollment
    • Vet exam fees, alternative therapy, and prescription diets covered
    • No special waiting period for orthopedic conditions

    Cons
    • 14-day waiting period for accidents

    4. Embrace Pet Insurance

    Embrace Pet Insurance

For those looking for an accident-only plan, Embrace is worth checking out as it offers this in addition to an accident and illness plan. Included in the coverage are vet visit fees, physical therapy, dental accidents and illnesses, and alternative treatments. There’s also an optional wellness rewards add-on that reimburses you for routine care procedures like microchipping and routine vet check-ups.

The comprehensive plan is customizable, with annual limits going up to $30,000. You can also select your own annual deductible (starting from $200) and reimbursement percentage up to 90%. The waiting period for accidents is just two days, which is a major perk, though there’s a 6-month waiting period for orthopedic conditions, though you can apply to have this reduced.

Embrace offers a healthy pet deductible, which means your annual deductible decreases by $50 every year you don’t get reimbursed. The upper age limit for enrollment in the accident and illness plan is 14 years.

    Pros
    • Broad range of coverage
    • Healthy pet deductible
    • Alternative treatments covered
    • Short waiting period for accidents
    • Vet visit fees included in the base plan

    Cons
    • Upper age limit for enrollment

    5. Figo Pet Insurance

    Figo Pet Insurance Logo

Figo’s standout feature is that allows you to choose a 100% reimbursement percentage—something you don’t see very often in the world of pet insurance. It offers one plan covering accidents and illnesses (covering various conditions and procedures including non-routine dental, alternative treatments, and behavioral issues) and you can add on a wellness package (basic or plus) and/or a vet exam fee add-on and an extra care pack.

That said, some may be disappointed that you have to add on vet exam fee coverage—something some providers cover in their base plans. On a more positive note, customers have access to a 24/7 live vet, which offers extra peace of mind.

Moreover, claims are not capped by the type of condition (per incident caps) and the accident waiting period is just one day. Orthopedic conditions have a 6-month waiting period, though this can be waived under certain circumstances.

    Pros
    • 100% reimbursement option
    • No upper age limits
    • One-day accident waiting period
    • No per-incident caps
    • 24/7 live vet service

    Cons
    • Vet exam fees are an add-on

    6. MetLife Pet Insurance

    MetLife Pet Insurance Logo

MetLife Pet Insurance has an accident and illness plan with a wide range of coverage including exam fees, alternative therapies, and special diets. You also have the option to choose a family plan which covers all your pets under the same policy—this is a standout feature as it’s not a common option.

Various discounts are offered, and you can customize your plan with various deductibles, reimbursement levels (including 100%), and annual limits. MetLife is also known for its short waiting periods—accident coverage starts at midnight EST once you’ve enrolled your pet and there is no special orthopedic condition waiting period.

On the downside, MetLife doesn’t cover prescription diets (something some competitors offer) and you can’t select higher than $10,000 for your annual limit.

    Pros
    • 100% reimbursement option
    • Various discounts available
    • Excellent range of coverage
    • Family plan option
    • Short waiting periods

    Cons
    • No unlimited annual limit option

    7. Wagmo Pet Insurance

    Wagmo_Logotype

Wagmo offers one comprehensive plan, with coverage including hospitalization, end-of-life care, pet ambulance, and virtual care in addition to in-office and in-home care. We’re impressed by the 24/7 virtual care option (included with some plans—not all) that allows you to talk to live vets and vet techs whenever you need to.

You can also choose from various tiers of a wellness plan and customize your plan with various deductibles and two reimbursement options (90% and 100%).

On the other hand, there are quite a few exceptions to Wagmo’s accident and illness plan. There is no coverage for prescription food, alternative care, vitamins and supplements, and dental surgeries. Some competitors include some or all of these in their plans. Moreover, Wagmo doesn’t cover hip dysplasia for pets over the age of 6.

    Pros
    • 100% reimbursement option
    • Pet ambulance and end-of-life care covered
    • 24/7 live vets and vet techs
    • Virtual care covered
    • Easy claims submission procedure

    Cons
    • 30-day waiting period for cancer treatments
    • No hip dysplasia coverage for pets over 6 years old

    8. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance

    HealthyPaws Pet Insurance Logo

Another provider that offers a single plan, Healthy Paws’ coverage includes alternative treatments and hospitalization in addition to commonly covered conditions and procedures. You can customize your deductibles and reimbursement options, though one thing we noticed is that the options become more limited the older the pet is.

For a 2-year-old dog, we were able to choose from five reimbursement and deductible options, but for a six-year-old dog, we were only offered three options. There are no maximum claim payout limits or per-incident caps and one thing we appreciated was that Healthy Paws let us know when a quote wasn’t offering us the best deal and pointed us in the direction of other providers.

Things that may disappoint some are Healthy Paws’ lack of a routine care plan and lengthy waiting period (12 months) for orthopedic conditions. Moreover, hip dysplasia is only covered if the pet is enrolled before the age of 6.

    Pros
    • No per-incident or lifetime caps
    • Unlimited maximum payouts
    • Donates to charities with each quote
    • Alternative treatments covered
    • Upfront about whether your pet is getting the best deal

    Cons
    • 12-month waiting period for hip dysplasia
    • Hip dysplasia enrollment age limit of 6 years

    9. ASPCA Pet Insurance

    ASPCA Pet Health Insurance Logo

ASPCA is one of the providers on the market that offers two separate plans—an accident and illness plan and an accident-only plan. Its accident and illness plan’s coverage is pretty broad and includes microchipping (rarely covered—major bonus), behavioral issues, exam fees, alternative therapy, and dental issues. You can add on a preventative care package. Moreover, ASPCA covers horses as well as cats and dogs.

Reimbursement options go up to 90% and there are three deductible options. In terms of annual limits, you can select up to $10,000 online but if you want to find out about more annual limit options, you have to contact ASPCA to speak to an advisor. The accident waiting period is quite long at 14 days but the good news is that ASPCA does not have a special waiting period for orthopedic conditions.

    Pros
    • Broad coverage
    • Microchipping covered
    • Exam fees covered
    • Coverage for horses
    • No special waiting period for orthopedic conditions

    Cons
    • You have to contact ASPCA for more annual limit options
    • Long accident waiting period

    10. Trupanion Pet Insurance

    Trupanion Pet Insurance Logo

Trupanion offers one accident and illness plan that covers herbal therapies and supplements in addition to commonly covered conditions and procedures. Unfortunately, there is no preventative care package, but you can customize your plan with “riders” (complementary care and pet owner assistant package). Reimbursement is set at 90% and you can choose your own deductible. There are no annual limits.

One of the major perks of Trupanion pet insurance is that it can pay your vet directly if need be. This goes a long way toward easing your concerns about having to pay a huge bill by yourself upfront.

On the downside, exam fees aren’t covered in the accident and illness plan and the waiting period for illnesses is 30 days—this is longer than many competitors’ waiting periods. There is a 5-day waiting period for accidents.  Moreover, the upper age limit for enrollment is 14 years.

    Pros
    • Direct vet payment option
    • No annual limits
    • Herbal therapies and supplements coverage
    • Reasonable accident waiting period
    • No special waiting period for orthopedic conditions

    Cons
    • 30-day illness waiting period
    • Upper age limit for enrollment

Buyer’s Guide: Comparing Pet Insurance Providers in Nevada

What to Look for in Pet Insurance

If you’re not familiar with pet insurance, it can be tricky knowing what to look for and what kind of policy would best suit your pet’s needs. Here, we’ll break it down to give you a better idea of what to take into account when choosing a plan.

    Policy Coverage

No two pet insurance policies are exactly the same, so it’s important to bear in mind that just because one provider covers a certain condition, it doesn’t mean that another one will. It’s a good idea to list conditions your pet is prone to or could potentially develop (i.e. by breed) to make it easier to check if the insurance provider you have in mind covers it.

For example, though most pet insurance companies cover hip dysplasia, some will only cover pets up to a certain age or that were enrolled by a certain age. Another example is that some insurance providers cover vet exam fees, prescription diets, behavioral issues, alternative therapies, and more whereas others don’t. It’s really important to check each provider’s policy carefully to make sure it best fits your pet’s needs.

    Customer Service & Reputation

Every insurance provider has its strengths and weaknesses, but ultimately, how they deal with customer questions and concerns can make all the difference. Not every customer will have the same experience, but it’s a good idea to go through customer reviews online to gauge the company’s reputation in terms of customer experience.

Are the reviews mostly positive in nature? Have many customers complained about unhelpful advisors and poor customer service? Is the company upfront and honest in its FAQ sections on its websites? Also, how easy is it to get in touch with that company?

When we do our research, one of the things that concern us most is when a company’s FAQ section is sparse and vague, as this means customers will have to dig deeper for answers to their questions.

Conversely, we greatly appreciate a juicy FAQ section as this makes it much easier to find what you’re looking for. We also like to see varied options for getting in touch (i.e. live chat, chatbot, email, phone, etc.).

    Claim Repayment

One of the things we can all appreciate about an insurance company is if its claim submission procedure is quick and efficient. Many companies make use of apps that allow you to upload your documents by taking a quick snap on your phone, which is great, but some companies, like Lemonade, receive a lot of praise for how quickly they actually reimburse you. Some companies, like Trupanion, are even willing to pay your vet directly.

Our advice is to choose a company with a simple claims procedure and that has a reputation for reimbursing quickly. The average length of time for getting reimbursed after claim submission is 5–9 days according to Pawlicy Advisor.

    Price of Policy

Budget is another major factor when it comes to choosing a pet insurance plan. The good news is that many providers offer plans at reasonable prices, including our number one pick Lemonade. Moreover, some don’t put caps on how much you can be reimbursed for claims, whereas others do.

All that said, you have to weigh up the monthly cost against what’s covered and how well that coverage suits your pet’s needs. We recommend shopping around and comparing what different providers have to offer before making your decision. Even if a provider has great reviews and reasonable pricing, it might not be the best one for your pet due to certain exclusions or age restrictions, for example.

    Plan Customization

If you’re someone who prefers to be recommended annual limits, deductibles, and reimbursement percentages, fortunately, many providers give you a heads-up as to what they’d recommend when you get your quote. However, most providers let you customize your plan to an extent if this is something you prefer.

Some are more customizable than others. For example, some set reimbursement rates that can’t be changed, whereas some let you choose from various reimbursement rates. Deductible and annual limit options are also typically customizable, though to different extents. Moreover, some companies let you add on routine care packages and riders whereas others don’t offer them at all.

    FAQ

Which Pet Insurance Provider Has the Best Reviews?

Companies with overwhelmingly positive reviews include Lemonade, Spot, Pumpkin, and Embrace. That said, all the providers on this list have received mostly positive reviews.

    What Does Pet Insurance Cover?

Each company’s coverage items vary somewhat, but some conditions and procedures are usually covered across the board. This includes cancer, UTIs, congenital and genetic conditions like hip dysplasia and intervertebral disc disease, allergies, chronic conditions like diabetes, orthopedic conditions, and preventable conditions like Lyme disease and parvo. Please check your provider’s individual policy for the specifics.

What Does Pet Insurance Not Cover?

This depends on the individual company, but common exclusions are pre-existing conditions, cosmetic procedures, pregnancy and breeding, and injury or illness caused by neglect or abuse. Pet insurance also does not cover routine care, but many companies allow you to add on a routine care package that is separate from your main plan.

    What the Users Say

Here, we’ll sum up what customers have to say about our top two picks—Lemonade and Spot. Please check out customer reviews for more as this is just a brief summary!

    Lemonade

Many comments point to a user-friendly app for easy claims submission, helpful and friendly customer service, and quick reimbursement, though a few users mention difficulties adjusting the policy.

    Spot

Most customers praise Spot’s friendly and efficient customer service, straightforward and quick claims process, and timely reimbursements. On the other hand, a few users mention that they had difficulties submitting claims.

Which Pet Insurance Provider Is Best for You?

The insurance provider you will choose for your pet really depends on who can offer what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly plan, you might consider Lemonade. On the other hand, if you want broader coverage, you might go for a company like Spot or Pumpkin.

Moreover, if your pet is a senior, you’ll need to look for a company that has no upper age limits for enrollment. Companies that do have age limits for enrollment typically set them at around 14 years. Also, be sure to always read the small print on a policy to make sure there are no restrictions or exclusions that would affect your pet.

Most importantly, you’ll want to choose a company with a solid reputation and a friendly, helpful customer service team. Money and coverage aside, good customer service is what’s going to make the difference between a smooth experience for you and a frustrating one.

    divider-multiprint

    Conclusion

To recap, Lemonade is our top pick for the best overall Nevada pet insurance plan closely followed by Spot (best value) and Pumpkin. We selected these providers based on various factors including customer service reputation, pricing, and breadth of coverage. That said, every provider on this list has strengths that make them worth checking out.

To reiterate, we strongly recommend checking out a sample policy (you can usually find these on provider websites) for the provider or providers you have in mind before you commit, and don’t forget to read the small print, too!

Trust us, it’s worth it—some customers have expressed disappointment that something they thought was covered by an insurance company was, in fact, not. Some providers make things really clear from the get-go whereas with others, you’ll need to check through the whole policy to make sure you know exactly what you’re paying for.
