The Importance of Pet Insurance

Pet insurance is becoming a more common thing for people to have, but many still don’t fully understand what the importance of pet insurance actually is. Pet insurance is the best way to ensure that you can keep your pet’s health care costs affordable, especially when unexpected expenses arise.

Just like with your own health, you aren’t planning on your dog breaking a leg, but if they do, pet insurance will help you be prepared. Just like your health insurance, your dog’s accidental injury will be covered, leaving you with only a certain copay or percentage of the total to cover on your own. Not only does pet insurance help you afford higher expenses, but it also allows you to extend your spending to be more evenly distributed throughout the year.

How Much Does Pumpkin Pet Insurance Cost?

How much you can expect to spend every month on your dog’s insurance through Pumpkin will depend on multiple factors. The primary factors considered are your dog’s age, breed, and pre-existing conditions. Older dogs, bigger breeds, and dogs with complex medical histories are usually going to cost more with any pet insurance company.

With Pumpkin, you can expect to spend approximately $30 per month for a small breed dog under the age of 5 months. For a large breed dog that is 6 years of age, then you can expect to spend around $90 per month. However, if you increase your annual coverage amount or decrease your out-of-pocket deductible, then your monthly costs will increase, regardless of your pet’s age, breed, or health.

Pumpkin offers a wellness plan as an add-on plan. This plan covers your dog’s annual wellness exam, two of their routine vaccinations, a heartworm test, and a fecal test every year. This add-on plan costs less than $20 per month, regardless of your dog’s age or breed. Pumpkin offers a 10% multi-pet discount, so the more pets you have, the more money you could save.

Additional Costs to Anticipate

You will have to pay a monthly fee to maintain your pet’s coverage with Pumpkin. You will also need to be prepared to pay a deductible for every visit. You can adjust your deductible to be as low as $100 and as high as $500. Depending on where you live, a $500 deductible may be a fair price, while in other areas, it may be more than your entire visit cost.

Pumpkin also allows you to adjust your annual max coverage limit. This means that at some point, the coverage they offer can become capped at a certain spend. Their lowest annual maximum is $10,000 of coverage, but Pumpkin also offers $20,000 and an unlimited option. For a pet that you suspect may end up with high healthcare costs due to their breed, age, or tendency to be accident prone, then an unlimited maximum may be very beneficial.

You also need to be prepared to potentially cover the entire cost of your dog’s vet care up front. Like most pet insurance companies, Pumpkin will reimburse you a percentage of your spending after you’ve spent the full amount up front. This means that you should either have a good amount of money set aside for potential up-front costs or you should have access to credit that could cover a decent amount, just in case.

How Can I Change My Pumpkin Pet Insurance Plan?

It’s not advisable to make changes to your Pumpkin pet insurance plan once you have already established coverage. If you make changes to an established plan, it will likely start the plan over from day one, which means your pet will be subject to the 14-day waiting period for coverage of accidents and illnesses. Usually, it’s advisable to only make changes to your pet’s insurance coverage at their annual sign-up period. This is typically 1 year from the beginning of coverage.
