The cheaper the deductible, the more your monthly premium is. The higher the reimbursement percentage, the more your monthly premium is.

Deductibles & Claims

Depending on your plan, Trupanion has a flexible deductible, meaning you can choose your deductible based on the monthly payment you wish to have for your premium. Trupanion offers deductibles ranging from $50 to $1,000, or the option for no deductible at all. A lower deductible makes for a higher premium and a higher deductible makes for a lower premium. It’s all about what you’re comfortable paying out of pocket before you use your insurance.

Trupanion also has a very user-friendly claims process. You can submit your claim online or by mail, and they also have a mobile app that makes it easy to submit claims and track the status of your reimbursement. Trupanion can also deal directly with your chosen veterinarian to manage all filed claims. If your vet participates and has Trupanion’s unique payment software, Trupanion can pay your vet directly if the vet accepts Vet Direct Pay, which eliminates the reimbursement process.

Policy Limits & Exclusions

Trupanion does not have any payout limits, which is a great benefit for pet owners. This means that you will never have to worry about your coverage running out. The base policy covers a variety of accidents and illnesses and up to 100% of eligible expenses.

Pre-Existing Conditions

Trupanion does not cover pre-existing conditions. A pre-existing condition is any condition that your pet had before enrolling in a policy. This includes conditions that have been diagnosed by a veterinarian and conditions that show signs.

Rate Increases

It is not uncommon for pet insurance rates to increase based on updated data. The data might include specific health issues they see in pets depending on breed, age, and geographic location. This could be the case for your Trupanion plans. However, they will never increase your rates specifically based on your pet getting older.

Waiting Period

Waiting periods vary by state. Please see your state’s policy for full coverage details. However, unlike other providers, Trupanion does not have extended waiting periods for cruciate ligaments and hip dysplasia.

How to File a Claim

If your vet does not offer Vet Direct Pay, to file a claim, you will need to submit a veterinary invoice to Trupanion. You can do this online, by fax, or by mail. Once your claim is received, they will process it usually within two business days.

Reviews from Customers

Trupanion has excellent ratings from all over the web. Customers seem to like their easy claims process, their quick response times, and their helpful customer service. Just a few examples include:

“I have had nothing but good experiences with Trupanion. They are quick to respond to any questions or claims I have submitted. I have recommended them to all of my friends who have pets.” – Sarah K., Ohio

“Trupanion has been a lifesaver for my family. We have had to use their services several times, and they have always been there for us. I would recommend them to anyone.” – John W., California

Our Verdict

Trupanion is a great pet insurance company that offers comprehensive coverage with no payout limits. They have some of the most comprehensive coverage within the pet insurance industry. The biggest draw of Trupanion, though, is it’s up to 100% payout amount. Most other pet insurance companies pay 70% of your claim, but Trupanion is dedicated to making sure you get your full 100%. This could add up to thousands of dollars in savings.

However, they do have a few drawbacks. First, they don’t cover pre-existing conditions, though most companies do not. Second, they have a waiting period of 5 days for accidents and 30 days for illnesses, which means if your pet gets sick two weeks into your plan, you can’t use the coverage, which again is common with most insurance providers. Overall, we think that Trupanion is a great choice for pet insurance, and we recommend them to our readers.
