What Breed of Dog Is Pluto? Famous Dogs Presented

Pluto is just one of the many Disney characters who captured our hearts over the years. Unlike other Disney animals, Pluto does not have human-like characteristics. As Mickey’s pet dog, he walks on all fours, barks, and yelps.

Pluto’s prominent snout and long ears have led to much speculation. What breed is he? Most sources agree that the modern iteration of Pluto is a mixed-breed dog.

How Old Is Pluto the Dog?

The unnamed Pluto made his debut in the 1930 cartoon, The Chain Gang. The black-and-white cartoon portrayed him as a bloodhound hot on the trail of an escaped convict, Mickey Mouse. The character evolved that year when Walt Disney named him “Pluto” and made him Mickey’s pet.

Pluto wasn’t precisely a puppy when he appeared in The Chain Gang. We think he and the rest of Mickey’s pals look pretty good for being almost 100 years old!

Has Pluto the Dog’s Appearance Changed?

Today’s Pluto looks quite different than the 1930 version. Pluto evolved from a stocky bloodhound to a thin mutt. One thing that has remained consistent over many decades is that his collar is too big for his skinny neck.

How Did Pluto the Dog Get His Name?

Which came first: Pluto the dog or Pluto the planet? Astronomers discovered the dwarf planet on February 18, 1930, while Disney released The Chain Gang in September of that year.

The dog’s name is likely not a coincidence. The odds are good that Walt Disney capitalized on the public’s fascination with the newly discovered planet.

Who Does the Voice of Disney’s Pluto?

Several actors have had the honor of voicing Pluto’s barks and signature “yeah, yeah, yeah” sounding pants. Pinto Colvig played Pluto on and off from 1931 to 1961.

Several other men had brief stints playing the role until Bill Farmer took over in 1990. Pluto is one of over 20 Disney characters that Farmer voices, including Sleepy the dwarf and Goofy.

Pay a Visit to Pluto’s Dog House

A trip to Disneyland would not be complete without visiting Pluto. You’ll see him walking around Mickey’s Toontown and can even get a photo with the pup. When you’re hungry, head to Pluto’s Dog House for a bite to eat. Fittingly enough, the food stand serves a variety of hot dogs.

Other Famous Disney Dogs

Many Disney cartoons and movies feature dogs. Pluto often appears alongside Goofy, another lanky mutt. Goofy is different because he wears clothes, talks, and walks on two legs.

Pongo and Perdita are the stars of 1961’s 101 Dalmatians. The two dogs are mates that go on to become parents. Of course we all remember Lady and the Tramp. And then there’s Max, the English sheepdog that discovered Ariel in The Little Mermaid.

Final Thoughts

Pluto first appeared in The Chain Gang, a black and white cartoon released in 1930. The character started as a sturdy-looking bloodhound but quickly evolved into a lanky mixed-breed dog. Walt Disney most likely named the dog after the newly discovered planet.
