What Day Is National Golden Retriever Day? When It Is & How It’s Celebrated

Golden Retrievers are one of the most beloved dog breeds and have been for many years. These gentle, loving dogs are often the perfect family dog, as well as being highly trainable for performing any number of tasks, like service dog work and hunting retrieving. If you’re a lover of Goldens, you may not have even realized that there is a National Golden Retriever Day that is celebrated annually on the 3rd of February every year.

Here’s what you need to know so you and your Golden can grab a treat together next time the holiday approaches.divider-paw

What Day is National Golden Retriever Day?

National Golden Retriever Day is celebrated on the 3rd of February every year. It began in 2012 and has been celebrated annually ever since, with more and more people (and dogs) celebrating it each year. Although this is currently a US-based holiday, some Golden Retriever fans are attempting to spread the holiday far beyond the US.

What’s the History of National Golden Retriever Day?

National Golden Retriever Day was founded in 2012 by a woman named Kristen Shroyer. Kristen selected February the 3rd as National Golden Retriever Day in honor of her own Golden, Quincey. Not only was this special day founded in honor of Quincey, who has passed, but it was also founded to celebrate the love and companionship that this fabulous breed of dog has offered to people since the 1800s.

How Should I Celebrate National Golden Retriever Day?

However you and your dog want to spend the day together will suffice, but if you’re feeling a little bit extra, then the two of you can go all out. Some suggested ideas for celebrating this day are to go for a walk or a hike together, go out for a special treat like ice cream and pup cups, or just to spend the day doing all of your Golden’s favorite activities, whether it’s fetch or napping.

If you’re looking for a unique way to celebrate this holiday, there are other great ways to celebrate. Consider volunteering your time to an animal shelter or even a Golden Retriever rescue organization. In lieu of volunteering your time, you may also consider donating to a rescue or shelter in your area in your Golden Retriever’s name in their honor. You can also seek out books at your local library that feature Golden Retrievers or spend your time educating people around you about this breed and why you love it.

In Conclusion

National Golden Retriever Day may be the excuse you didn’t know you needed to celebrate your favorite dog breed. This day was founded in honor of a Golden Retriever named Quincey, but its purpose is to celebrate far more than one good dog’s life. This holiday is intended to celebrate the bond between people and their Golden Retrievers, as well as to bring awareness to Goldens in rescues and shelters that need new homes. Make sure to take time with your Golden to celebrate by doing some of your favorite things together.
