parrot playing toyPet parrots are not unlike other types of domestic pets; they need physical activity, mental stimulation, and enrichment to stay happy and healthy. You can provide all three to your bird by investing in high-quality, appropriate toys for your parrot’s species and size. A toy designed for a canary will not work for a parrot, which is much bigger with a much larger bite force.

Unfortunately, many dangerous toys exist, so you must know what to look for when shopping for the best parrot toys. Read on to find our reviews of what we believe are the 10 best options this year and be sure you read the buying guide to find out how to ensure the toys you’re buying are safe and suitable.

  • The 10 Best Parrot Toys

    1. Prevue Pet Products Ladder Bird Toy – Best Overall

Prevue Pet Products Naturals Rope Ladder Bird Toy

    Dimensions: 17″L x 3″W x 1″L
    Materials: Sisal Rope, Wood

The Prevue Pet Products Naturals Rope Ladder Bird Toy is a fantastic option for parrots who must be encouraged to participate in physical activity in their cages. The ladder is made of a 100% natural and eco-friendly material that is reminiscent of materials your parrot would encounter in its natural habitat. The unique variety of textures and irregular shapes encourages foot exercise to keep your parrot’s feet healthy. It connects quickly and easily to the cage with its quick-link attachment. For these reasons, we believe this product to be the best overall parrot toy.

Though this ladder is designed for parrots, don’t forget to look at the measurements to ensure it’s an optimal size for your bird. It may be too small for some larger-sized parrot species.

    Pros
    • Made of natural materials
    • Promotes physical activity
    • Eco-friendly materials
    • Promotes foot health
    • Connects easily
    Cons
    • May be too small for larger species

    2. JW Pet Hol-ee Roller Bird Toy – Best Value

    Dimensions: 25″L x 4″W x 9″L
    Materials: Rubber, Metal Chain

You don’t need to spend a fortune on toys for your parrot, especially since you know it’s going to destroy many of its toys, anyway. The brightly colored JW Pet Hol-ee Roller Bird Toy will set you back just a few dollars, providing bird owners with the best parrot toy for the money. This round toy is made of 100% durable rubber material that can withstand even the most aggressive chewers. It has a bell inside to appease birds that love to hear the ringing sound. Stuff the ball with materials like paper or treats to add a fun foraging element. I’ve had this toy for my jenday conure for over a year, and it is, by far, her favorite. We stuff it with shredded paper, and she’ll play with it for hours.

The holes in the ball may be too large to hold certain materials (e.g., treats).

    Pros
    • Very affordably priced
    • Durable rubber material
    • Bell inside
    • Can double as a foraging toy
    • Fun, bright color
    Cons
    • Holes may be too big for some stuffable material

    3. Caitec Featherland Knots N Blocks Bird Toy – Premium Choice

    Dimensions: 5″L x 6″W x 6″H
    Materials: Wood, Cotton, Natural Fabric

The Caitec Featherland Paradise Knots N Blocks Bird Toy is the priciest toy on our list, but it’s still worth considering for your large parrot. It’s designed with birds like cockatoos, Amazon parrots, and Eclectuses in mind. This interactive toy encourages your parrot to swing, climb, and stay active. Its bright colors and eye-catching movements are engaging and stimulating to prevent boredom. The toy is made of durable and bird-safe materials. It has various textures to encourage curiosity, preening, and beak conditioning.

While this toy is durable for most parrots, it may not withstand particularly aggressive birds. Macaws, for example, can make pretty quick work of the toy in just a few days.

    Pros
    • Various textures to encourage preening
    • Promotes exercise
    • Eye-catching colors
    • Designed for large parrot species
    Cons
    • May not be durable against aggressive birds

    4. Planet Pleasures Octopus Piñata Bird Toy

    Dimensions: 9″L x 3.5″W x 3.5″H
    Materials: Plant Material

The Planet Pleasures Octopus Piñata Bird Toy is a great option for nervous birds or those that suffer from separation anxiety. The shreddable materials inside can ease stress and provide a great enrichment activity. The toy is made of 100% materials that your parrot would find in its natural environment. The fibrous materials can help condition your pet’s beak and even prevent overgrowth.

This toy doesn’t come with its own hook for attaching it to your cage, so you will need to supply this yourself. It’s also not the most durable toy on our list, making it best for less aggressive birds.

    Pros
    • Good for anxious birds
    • Natural materials
    • Can help condition beak
    • Shreddable materials
    Cons
    • No cage attachment hook
    • Not as durable as other toys

    5. Super Bird Creations Bagel Cascade Bird Toy

    Dimensions: 12″L x 4.5″W x 4.5″H
    Materials: Plastic, Metal, Cardboard/Paper

The Super Bird Creations Bagel Cascade Bird Toy has four strands of plastic links that dangle from a durable PVC core. Each link strand features compressed cardboard bagels that most parrots adore destroying. Thankfully, you can buy the bagels separately, so when your bird inevitably destroys them, you don’t need to throw the whole toy out. This toy satisfies a bird’s urge to chew and promotes good beak health.

This toy isn’t the best option for aggressive chewers, though, because you can buy the cardboard bagels separately and “refill” the toy, it can still last a long time.

    Pros
    • Can buy additional cardboard bagels
    • Satisfies the urge to chew
    • Promotes beak health
    • Durable PVC materials
    Cons
    • Easily destroyed quickly by aggressive chewers

    JW-Pet-Swing-N-Perch-Bird-Toy

    Dimensions: 16″L x 1.5″W x 13″H
    Materials: Cotton, Natural Fabric

The JW Pet Swing N’ Perch Bird Toy, as the name implies, doubles as both a swing and a perch for your small parrot. Please take note of the dimensions to ensure your pet will fit comfortably. There are three sizes to choose from, however, so finding the right size for your bird shouldn’t be an issue. The toy is made of a tightly woven cotton material, so it’s comfortable for your parrot’s sensitive feet. It is machine washable, making clean-up is a breeze. It can relieve boredom by providing a place for your parrot to rest or swing.

The rope material is easily destroyed, so you must check it daily for snags to keep your pent safe.

    Pros
    • Three sizes to choose from
    • Comfortable cotton material
    • Machine washable
    • Provides boredom relief
    Cons
    • Material easily shreddable

You can hang it straight down in the cage or with both ends attached, whichever suits your bird and its cage best. This colorful and shiny toy is entertaining and boredom-busting. It’s best for a medium-sized parrot.

Some skittish birds may be initiated by the noisiness of this toy.

    Pros
    • Great for birds that love to make noise
    • Durable materials
    • Two hanging options
    • Colorful and shiny to draw your pet’s attention
    Cons
    • Not suitable for large parrots
    • Some may be afraid of its noises

The Super Bird Creations Wiggles & Wafers Bird Toy is a great pick for your small to medium-sized parrot. Its bright, colorful appearance and multiple textures are great for distracting and entertaining bored birds. It promotes mental and physical health, and its destructible nature can satisfy your bird’s urge to chew. The toy is made of bird-safe materials, including pine wood, shoelaces, and acrylic beads.

Because this toy is made for small to medium-sized birds, any species larger than that can destroy it quite quickly.

    Pros

    • Promotes mental and physical health
    • Made of bird-safe materials
    • Multiple textures
    Cons
    • Easily destroyed
    • Not for larger species

    9. Exotic Nutrition Triple Treat Forager Small Animal Toy

    Dimensions: 2″L x 3″W x 20″H
    Materials: Plastic

The Exotic Nutrition Triple Treat Forager Small Animal Toy is a fun foraging toy you can use to hide your parrot’s favorite treats. It comes with three large clear cups with lids your bird will need to push to the side to reach the treats inside. The toy has a bell at the bottom to appease birds that like the clanging sound and is made from a heavy-duty, nearly indestructible acrylic material. My jenday conure has had this toy for a year and a half, and in the last week the acrylic lid on one of the cups has fallen victim to her chewing.

At 20 inches long, this toy is huge. Make sure you take measurements of your parrot’s cage to ensure it’ll fit in there with plenty of room to spare.

    Pros
    • Three clear cups to encourage foraging
    • Cups are large to hold treats of varying sizes
    • Bell at the bottom
    • Durable materials

It’s made of 100% natural and non-toxic materials, like wood and rope in various textures. The toy encourages physical activity and provides mental stimulation, potentially reducing loneliness and aggression.

This toy is not suitable for larger or particularly aggressive birds. Macaws, for example, can destroy it in a day or two. In addition, the ropes aren’t as durable as they should be and can be torn apart easily.

    Pros
    • 100% natural materials
    • Promotes physical activity
    • Bright and colorful
    Cons
    • Not for large or aggressive birds

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Best Toys for Parrots

There are three main factors to consider when choosing the best toy for your parrot: materials, components, and size.

    Materials

The materials your pet’s toys are made of are arguably the most critical factor to consider. First and foremost, they need to be bird-safe. As a parrot owner, you know how sensitive they are to certain materials so it is essential you familiarize yourself with the safe and unsafe options for toy materials.

Below you will find some of the most common material choices for bird toys as well as things you need to consider as you look at each material to ensure you’re choosing the safest toy possible.

    Wood

Safe woods include but are not limited to pine, balsa, beech, basswood, dogwood, Douglas fir, poplar, maple, ash, and manzanita.

Unsafe woods include but not limited to: cedar, cherry, plywood, and oak.

Do not use branches that you’ve found outside as they may potentially be contaminated.

Flavored woods are not recommended as birds shouldn’t be encouraged to eat wood. The fruit sugars used to flavor the wood provide the perfect environment for bacteria growth.

Many wood toys are colored during the manufacturing process as birds can distinguish colors and they make the toys more interesting. If your bird’s wooden toy is colored, it must be done with non-toxic food coloring, child-safe and non-toxic paint, or vegetable dyes.

Never soak wood toys to clean them. Use a damp cloth to wipe the soiled area until it’s clean. If your bird likes to dunk its toys in its water bowl, discard them periodically as the moisture can become a breeding ground for bacteria.

    Rope

The safest rope materials are made of 100% natural fibers like jute, hemp, or sisal.

Do not purchase nylon rope toys as they can cause significant injury or cuts as the strands are very strong.

The rope fibers must be maintained properly to prevent snagging. In addition, your bird’s nails and beak need to be kept trim to prevent snagging. Parrots have become entangled and even lost limbs or their lives in poorly maintained ropes. It is your responsibility to check your bird’s ropes daily to ensure they’re not frayed.

    Chain

Stainless steel is best as it is easy to clean and lead-free, though nickel-plated is acceptable. Avoid zinc-coated or galvanized chains as birds are very susceptible to zinc poisoning.

There should not be any open links as unwelded chain can have sharp corners and openings that can catch body parts

The links should be a safe size for your bird so it will not get its nails or legs caught inside.

The length of the chain shouldn’t be too long that it could wrap around your bird.

    Acrylic

Acrylic is generally very safe and nearly indestructible, though not the best option for aggressive chewers.

Acrylic toys should be at least 3/16 inches thick and those designed for smaller birds shouldn’t be given to parrots as they can easily break the components.

    Leather

Leather is great for birds to chew and play with, as they like to untie knots, however only vegetable-tanned leather should be used. Do not use dyed leather or any that has been tanned with chemicals.

Any wet or soiled material must be replaced as it can harbor bacteria.

    Toy Components

There’s more to your bird’s toy than just the material it’s made of. As with its materials, however, not all toy components are safe for your pet. Here are some things you need to consider as you’re shopping

    Fasteners

Quick links or C-clamps are the safest fasteners to attach your bird’s toys to its cage. Never use split rings, spring-loaded clips, or shower rings.

Fasteners with small hardware can be destroyed and inadvertently ingested by aggressive birds.

    Bells

Birds love to ring bells, but choose toys with a cow or liberty bell design. The clapper should not be removable as it can be a choking hazard and it should not be made of lead.

Avoid Christmas jingle bell type bells as the narrow openings can catch toes.

    Rings

Do not purchase toys with rings that are not appropriately sized for your bird as it may get its head caught.

Do not buy toys with multiple rings looped together as it presents a hanging hazard.

    Size

Size is important to consider for several reasons. Firstly, a toy that is too small or too big for your pet will not get played with or could pose a potential safety hazard. That’s why we included the dimensions of each toy we reviewed, so you can take your bird’s measurements to ensure the toy will be appropriately sized.

Secondly, you’ll need to look at the toy’s dimensions to ensure it fits in or on your bird’s cage the way you want it to.

Why Are Toys So Important for Birds?

There are many reasons to include toys in your bird’s environment.

First, they promote cognitive and physical enrichment. As nice as it would be to give your bird free reign of your home 24/7/365, this isn’t realistic in most households. As such, your pet is going to spend some of its day in its cage and without something inside to keep it occupied, it’ll become bored quickly. Boredom can trigger depression and anxiety in birds, just as it does in humans. An unfulfilled parrot can turn to destructive behaviors like feather plucking to kill time. Once these behaviors become a habit, overcoming them can be very difficult.

Parrots in the wild spend most of their day foraging for food. They also participate in other natural activities like nest building or flock interaction, and some toys can encourage these natural behaviors, providing a sense of fulfillment.

Finally, toys encourage physical activity and provide good wear for your bird’s beak and nails.

What Types of Toys Are There?

Several toy types exist and it’s ideal to have at least one or two of each type to keep your bird entertained and fulfilled.

    Chewable or Shreddable Toys

Chewable or shreddable toys are ones your parrots immediately begin destroying as soon as you put them in its cage. As weird as it may seem to buy toys for the purpose of destruction, these toys provide a lot of fun and a sense of accomplishment for your bird.

    Foraging Toys

Foraging for food is an activity that wild parrots spend a lot of time on. A foraging toy will force your bird to instinctively search for food, exercising both its mind and body. Some foraging toys are made of indestructible materials, while others are designed like chewable toys and are meant to be destroyed.

    Exercise Toys

Your bird needs toys that promote physical activity when it is in its cage and unable to fly about its room. Swings are a great exercise toy as they encourage your bird to move around, and their gentle swaying motion can mimic that of a tree branch your parrot would perch on in the wild.

    Parrot Toy Safety 101

Unfortunately, not all bird toys on the market are safe for your parrot. The ten we reviewed above met our safety standards, but we can’t say the same about other options you may stumble across as you shop.

Here are some toy safety tips to keep in mind as you introduce new toys to your parrot:

    • Check the clips that attach the toy to the check daily to ensure they’re closed properly.
    • Ensure knotted toys are tied as close as possible to the toy to avoid any loops that your pet could become entangled in
    • Check the integrity of all rope toys to ensure they’re not fraying.
    • Supervise your parrot when introducing a new toy to see how it interacts with the toy.
    • If you’re in doubt of a toy’s safety, take it out.

    Conclusion

The Prevue Pet Products Naturals Rope Ladder Bird Toy is the best overall parrot, as it features natural materials and promotes foot health. For the best value parrot toy, the JW Pet Hol-ee Roller Bird Toy combines a low price with durable construction and foraging opportunities.

We hope our reviews have helped you narrow down your parrot toy options. Remember that safety should be your number one concern as you shop for toys for your pet. You must ensure the toys your parrot plays with are safe. Remember, if you’re ever in doubt, take it out!
