It’s no secret that having pets is a lot of work. That is no exception in the world of owning chickens. Egg collecting, coop cleaning, feeding, and protecting from predators are all tasks that mean there is always something on the to-do list.

Omlet is an England-based pet company whose purpose is to create pet products that provide convenience and quality to animal lovers around the world. In 2004, Omlet started as a company solely focused on pet chickens.

Since then, they have expanded their products to include chickens, birds, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and gerbils. I had the pleasure of testing out their Automatic Chicken Coop Door. If there is a product that can add convenience and security and even slightly reduce my never-ending pet care schedule, I’m all in.

About Omlet

Omlet Automatic Chicken Coop Door - coop door on the table

Omlet started as just four college men enrolled in a design school in London. Their mindset for creating new pet products would be to spark the question “Why hasn’t it always been done this way?”. Their first product ever was an innovative chicken coop that would encourage pet chickens. Omlet understands the work that goes into caring for chickens and especially understands that our chickens like to start their day as early as possible. Creating a reliable, durable, and safe automatic door was accomplished by Omlet. This company took its development very seriously, formulating over 200 prototypes over 3 years. Variable programming, safety sensors, weather durability, and universal fitting make it easy for chicken owners to have peace of mind knowing they’re safe and sticking to their preferred schedule.

Versatility

Omlet truly created a product that can be the right choice for anyone. The door fits universally on any coop, has 3 different settings to fit anyone’s lifestyle, has two options for a power source, has the option to open to the left or the right, and is rated to work in the most extreme climates.

Dependability

Here in Ohio, the weather has been giving us whip-lash. From storms to torrential rain to below-freezing temperatures has made us question what season we’re in lately. The Omlet Automatic Chicken Coop Door has handled it all with ease and has opened and closed right on time. Not to mention it is extra important for my chickens’ safety as our area is full of predators, such as coyotes. Knowing the door will close every night and keep them safe gives us peace of mind.

Safety

I have a few chickens who love to stand in the doorway and really contemplate if they want to end their day and go to bed. The door has built-in sensors that can easily detect if a chicken is lollygagging in the doorway, just like an elevator. The door will gently nudge and open, encouraging the chicken to move. The door will attempt to close 5 more times until the path is clear. Hopefully, your chicken is smart enough to move well before its last attempt.

Our Experience With Omlet Automatic Chicken Coop Door

When my husband and I moved out to the Ohio countryside, we automatically knew we wanted chickens. The property we purchased came with two outdoor sheds, so we wanted to convert those to unconventional coops. We had to cut small doorways to make doors for our birds. At first, we just had a simple plank of wood as a door that we would have to open and close every morning manually.

When winter came around, that got old fast. I decided to order some cheaper automatic doors from Amazon. One word: TRASH. Any time the temperature dropped below 50°F, the gears would jam and the doors wouldn’t open or close. So, I found myself going out there every morning and night, which completely defeated the purpose of that purchase. Also, coyotes, raccoons, and opossums are the top predators in our area. Having those doors open at night puts our chickens at risk.

Enter the Omlet Automatic Chicken Coop Door. Not to be dramatic, but it’s been a godsend. We have 23 chickens, 3 dogs, and 4 cats, so my day is full of animal care. The convenience alone this door has provided has been worth every penny. Installation was extremely simple. My husband had the door assembled and mounted in about 20 minutes. The installation manual was very easy to follow. I calibrated and programmed the door to our desired setting in less than 2 minutes.

The ever-changing Ohio weather has been no challenge for this door. We’ve had storms, torrential rain, and below-freezing temperatures and there have been no issues with its operation. I think the best benefit of having this door is we can sleep in and I am not met with the stink eye from my chickens when they weren’t let out on their terms. I also love the different settings. I currently use the time setting and will keep it that way.

I appreciate the light setting, but I have a few chickens that like to stay out past sunset, so I like having it close about an hour after the sun goes down to ensure all my chickens have ample time to get into the coop. All in all, I have zero complaints or concerns with this product, and my chickens and I are much happier with the dynamic we have currently.

Conclusion

The Omlet Automatic Chicken Coop Door has been an excellent addition to our chicken coop setup. The difference between going from cheap, constantly jamming doors to a quality and reliable door has been paramount. The saying “you get what you pay for” has been evident throughout this whole experience and given the chosen accessories, is very reasonable. Omlet proudly discusses on their website the years of development this product went through before it was perfected. I am happier. My chickens are happier. What more could you ask for? Thank you Omlet!
