The Plain Parakeet is named so for its basic coloring, not its personality. These little birds are sociable, curious, and smart. They live successfully in the wild, but they have adapted well to life in captivity as pets. This Parakeet is not as popular as other types, such as its cousin, the Quaker Parakeet. It is high time that the Plain Parakeet gets the attention that it deserves, so let’s explore this interesting bird species together!

divider-birdSpecies Overview

Common Names: Plain Parakeet
Scientific Name: Brotogeris tirica
Adult Size: 9 inches in length, 2 ounces in weight
Life Expectancy: 13 – 18 years

Origin and History

Plain Parakeets hail from South America and are especially common in Brazil. They live in the area’s lowlands and within forests, but deforestation and other human-related activities are threatening this bird’s natural habitat. Fortunately, the Plain Parakeet has learned how to adapt to and even thrive in their ever-changing habitats.

There is no shortage of the Plain Parakeet in the wild today, and they are even spreading out to urban areas and small cities, where they settle in parks and other public spaces. While these birds prefer tropical habitats, they can do well in different climate zones as pets if they are well protected from the outdoor weather elements.

Temperament

Plain Parakeets are extremely sociable and affectionate. They enjoy spending time with their human companions and other birds of about the same size. These birds like to show off with whistles, dances, and wiggles whenever they have the chance to. They do not like to be left alone for too long, so owners who work all day should consider providing their Plain Parakeet with a bird companion to spend time with. The Plain Parakeet is rarely aggressive save toward children who are loud, intimidating, or aggressive toward them.

Pros
  • Fun-loving and sociable
  • Small and easy to care for
  • Entertaining
Cons
  • They are susceptible to multiple health problems
  • They can be clingy and demanding

Speech & Vocalizations

Some may be disappointed to learn that Plain Parakeets do not talk or mimic, like other types of parrots do. They do sing and screech, especially when they get excited. However, owners should not expect them to repeat words or sounds. Some Plain Parakeets produce simple sounds that they might hear often, but this is rare. These birds are not that loud when they do sing or screech, making them an excellent pet option for apartment dwellers.

Plain Parakeet Colors and Markings

As their name suggests, Plain Parakeets are just that: plain. They have green feathers and light-colored beaks. Although these little birds might seem plain at first glance, the green hues can vary greatly throughout their bodies, which gives them a multidimensional look, especially in the sunlight.

divider-birdsCaring for the Plain Parakeet

Caring for a Plain Parakeet involves providing it with a suitable caged habitat to spend most of its time in for comfort and safety reasons. Their habitat should be at least 2 feet by 2 feet in size, but the larger, the better. The habitat should be outfitted with a bowl of water for bathing, a perch for hanging out, faux tree branches for exercise, and toys (like mirrors, swings, and wooden blocks) for mental stimulation.

Since these birds are so sociable, it is a good idea to consider housing them with one other Plain Parakeet or bird of the same size to ensure consistent companionship. This Parakeet requires daily exercise time outside of their habitat, but they love to fly, so their out-of-habitat time should be on a leash or in a secluded room with the windows closed.

Common Health Problems

While the Plain Parakeet is strong and hardy, easily adaptable, and long-lived, there are several health problems that it is susceptible to and that should be watched for by owners. These include:

  • Avian gout
  • Psittacosis
  • Bacterial hepatitis
  • Avian tuberculosis

The best way to prevent these diseases is to make diet, exercise, and overall care a priority. Regular visits to the veterinarian are also extremely important for preventative care and to identify any health conditions that are developing early.

Diet and Nutrition

Around 60% of this Parakeet’s diet should be made up of the seeds, grains, and grasses found in commercial Parakeet feed. About 30% of a Plain Parakeet’s diet should consist of fruits such as bananas, apples, pineapple, oranges, pears, and melon. The fruit should be cut into small chunks before being offered. The rest of this bird’s diet should consist of fresh veggies like celery, broccoli, squash, and cucumber.

Exercise

Plain Parakeets are extremely active and need exercise throughout the day. Including plenty of toys in the bird’s habitat to play with will keep them busy. It is a good idea to switch the toys out every few days to optimize mental stimulation and minimize boredom.

In addition to offering habitat exercise, owners should let their Plain Parakeets out for at least 2 hours a day so they can fly and explore. Putting a perch up in the living room or dining room will give the bird a place to hang out and be a part of the family, which offers mental exercise.

Where to Adopt or Buy a Plain Parakeet

Plain Parakeets can be found for sale at certain pet shops, especially exotic shops. However, they are not as popular as other types of Parakeets, so you may have to search a little to find a seller. Another option is to find a Plain Parakeet breeder to buy from. You can get a Plain Parakeet from a breeder as soon as it is weaned, allowing you to bond with the bird while it is still young for a lifetime of trusting companionship.
