Dogs comprise the bulk of insured pets, with cats coming in second. As you can see, many pet owners have pet insurance, and you can, too.

Progressive offers pet insurance coverage through Pets Best Health Insurance. But is Progressive pet insurance affordable? In this article, we’ll cover this insurance company and explore your options as a pet owner to help you decide if Progressive Pet Insurance is right for you and your pup. 2

The Importance of Pet Insurance

Without pet insurance, you could be looking at thousands of dollars in vet bills if your pet gets sick or acquires an injury. When your pet has an insurance policy, your vet bills will decrease significantly, leaving you with more money in your bank account.

Just like us humans, accidents and illnesses come unexpectedly, but if your pet has coverage, you’ll be able to treat the accident or illness without spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on vet bills. In addition, a pet parent will be more likely to take their pet to the vet versus having no pet insurance.

Signing up for a pet policy with Progressive is easy and can be done directly from the website. Simply enter information about your pet and get a free quote in minutes.

How Much Does Progressive Pet Insurance Cost?

Pet insurance is not one-size-fits-all. The cost will depend on a few factors, such as your pet’s age, breed, region, plan, reimbursement rates, and deductibles. Progressive allows you to customize these rates. For example, you can choose reimbursement rates of 70%, 80%, or 90%, and deductibles rates range from $50, $100, $200, $250, $500, or $1,000. They offer an accident-only plan with a $10,000 annual limit and a $250 deductible for only $9 per month for dogs and $6 for cats.

A rule of thumb with insurance is the higher the deductible and the lower your reimbursement rate, the lower your monthly premium. However, choosing a lower deductible and higher reimbursement rate will result in significantly higher monthly premiums. What’s nice about Progressive is you can play around with the plan from the website before committing, which gives you an exact price of what you’ll pay monthly.

Progressive offers three plans: Essential, Plus (the most popular), and Elite. However, in order for wellness exams to be covered, you must buy an add-on for an additional fee. The Essential Wellness add-on runs $19 extra per month, and the Best Wellness add-on runs up to $35 per month. Regarding the value of these add-ons, you’ll need to determine if it’s right for you and your pup. For example, if you only want an accident-only plan, you cannot purchase a wellness add-on.

Below, you’ll find estimates from different regions, deductibles, reimbursement rates, and different ages, as well as the three different plans through Progressive.

Maryland Female French Bulldog: 4 years old Plus Plan/No add-on: $94.73 monthly Deductible: $500 Reimbursement rate: 80% With Essential Wellness add-on: $113.81 With Best Wellness add-on: $123.31
Texas Male Mixed-breed cat: 7 years old Essential Plan/No add-on: $42.11 monthly Deductible: $250 Reimbursement rate: 90% With Essential Wellness add-on: $61.19 With Best Wellness add-on: $70.69

North Carolina Female Oriental Shorthair: 14 years old Plus Plan/ No add-on: $66.73 Deductible: $1,000 Reimbursement rate: 90% With Essential Wellness add-on: $85.81 With Best Wellness add-on: $95.31

Additional Costs to Anticipate

Pre-existing conditions are usually not covered by any pet insurance. A pre-existing condition is when your dog or cat had an issue at least 12 months before signing up for insurance. The recurring condition will only be covered if your pet has been sign-free for at least 12 months.

Knowing the waiting periods is important. For Progressive, there is a 3-day waiting period for accident coverage, a 14-day waiting period for accident and illness coverage, and a 6-month waiting period for cruciate ligament conditions. If an injury or illness occurs before your waiting period ends, it will not be covered and will be considered a pre-existing condition.

What Are the Details of the Three Progressive Pet Insurance Plans?

Progressive offers an accident-only plan that covers just that: accidents. This plan includes a $10,000 annual coverage with a $250 deductible for only $9.00 per month. This plan is an excellent one for those who just want accidents covered.

The Essential plan covers accidents, illnesses, cancer, hereditary conditions, ER visits, and RX medications. The Plus plan (the most popular) covers the same as the Essential plan with the addition of accident and illness exam fees. Finally, the Elite plan covers all of these conditions, as well as rehabilitation, acupuncture, and chiropractic services. With the exception of the accident-only plan, all plans are customizable regarding deductible and reimbursement rates.

Does Progressive Pet Insurance Cover Dental Cleanings?

Progressive covers dental cleanings with its Best Wellness add-on, but it only pays $150; that’s better than no coverage, but you’ll still be handing over money for cleanings. Keeping your pet’s teeth in shape is crucial for your pet’s overall well-being, and having pet insurance that covers some dental issues is a plus.

Progressive covers dental issues, such as periodontal disease or teeth injuries requiring surgery. Most plans do not cover dental issues at all, and it looks like you have options with this pet insurance regarding dental issues. If dental cleanings are of importance to you, you’ll need to add the Best Wellness option to your plan to ensure you get $150 toward a dental cleaning.

Does Progressive Offer Discounts?

You receive a 5% discount for enrolling multiple pets on top of the automatic 5% discount just for enrolling in a Progressive pet insurance plan. You also receive discounts if you pay annually rather than monthly. With Progressive, you can pay monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. Progressive does not mention if existing home and auto insurance customers receive discounts; it would be worth checking before enrolling.

Conclusion

Progressive is one of many pet insurance companies to choose from. A perk is the 5% discount just for enrolling, as well as a 5% discount if you enroll multiple pets. You can customize your reimbursement rates and deductibles to fit your budget, and you’ll also receive a discount if you pay annually. Having pet insurance for your dog or cat can save you a significant amount of money, and if you can make it work with your budget, you’ll discover the benefits when it comes to expensive vet bills.
