  • The 10 Best Litter Boxes for Multiple Cats

    1. Catit Jumbo Hooded Cat Litter Pan — Best Overall

    Catit Jumbo Hooded Cat Pan_Chewy

The Catit Jumbo Hooded Cat Litter Pan may be a surprising choice for the top spot on this list, given that it’s an affordable and no-frills option. However, it’s excellent at what it does, and that’s all we cared about when naming it the best overall litter box for multiple cats.

The swinging hood gives any cat inside plenty of privacy while they do their business, and it also does a good job of containing odors after they leave. There’s a carbon-impregnated filter on top that helps trap noxious smells as well.

Cleaning it is a breeze, thanks to the built-in anchor that keeps the bag open while you scoop messes into it. The hood comes completely off, allowing you to clean it without contorting yourself into a pretzel in the process.

Putting it together only takes a few seconds, so it doesn’t require an engineering degree to provide your cats with a top-notch bathroom. The only issue is that you’ll need to keep plenty of litter inside, as waste will stick to the sides and bottom like glue.

That’s a small price to pay for such a superb litter box, though, and it’s certainly not enough to knock the Catit Jumbo out of the top spot.

    Pros
    • Swinging hood gives cats privacy
    • Carbon-impregnated filter traps odors
    • Anchor keeps bag open while scooping
    • Hood comes off for easy cleaning
    • Easy to assemble
    Cons
    • Waste sticks to sides and bottom

    2. Frisco High-Sided Cat Litter Box, Extra Large — Best Value

Frisco High Sided Cat Litter Box_Chewy

The Frisco High-Sided Cat Litter Box, Extra Large is nothing special to look at — it’s just a giant pan with tall side walls. However, while those walls are designed to keep litter from flying out while your cat scratches, they also make this large litter box perfect for tending to multiple cats.

The simplicity of the design keeps the price down, making this the best litter box for multiple cats for the money. Despite the low price, the plastic is thick and durable, so it should last for quite a while.

The front wall is low enough that it’s easy for cats to get in and out, making it a solid choice for senior kitties. The lack of a lid will let odors escape, but it also makes it easy for you to get in and scoop up messes as they happen, keeping the bathroom clean for all occupants.

It’s so big, though, that it can weigh a ton when it’s full of litter, so moving it can be a (literal) pain.

The Frisco High-Sided isn’t perfect, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything better at a comparable price.

    Pros
    • Good value for the price
    • Tall sides keep litter from flying out when cat scratches
    • Thick and durable plastic
    • Easy for cats to get in and out
    • Open design makes it easy to spot-clean
    Cons
    • Lack of lid lets odors escape
    • Extremely heavy when full

    3. PetSafe Automatic Hooded Cat Litter Box – Premium Choice

    PetSafe Automatic litter box_Amazon

The worst part about having multiple cats is having to clean the litter box more often than usual. The PetSafe ScoopFree Automatic Hooded Cat Litter Box takes that worry out of your hands because it will handle the scooping for you.

There’s a sensor inside that activates the machine when your cat leaves, causing the automatic rake to pass through the litter, collecting the clump of waste and depositing it in a covered tray. All you have to do is empty the tray periodically — the machine does the rest.

The machine never gets tired or forgets to clean up after your cats, so your house should never stink and your cats should never have to use a filthy bathroom. It’s a low-maintenance option. It comes in both top- or front-loading models, allowing you to pick the style that works best for your cat.

It is expensive, though, so you’ll pay for all that convenience. It also requires special litter, which is more expensive and harder to find than the regular stuff.

If you truly hate cleaning litter boxes, the PetSafe ScoopFree can take that chore off your plate once and for all.

    Pros
    • Box cleans itself
    • Keeps odors to a minimum
    • Ensures that box is always in good shape for your cats
    • Available in both top- or front-loading styles
    • Low-maintenance
    Cons
    • On the pricey side
    • Requires special litter

    4. Modkat Litter Box Top-Entry Cat Litter Box

    Modkat Litter Box_Amazon

The Modkat Litter Box Top-Entry Cat Litter Box is a stylish, modern-looking option that won’t detract from your home’s décor. The top-entry construction also greatly reduces litter tracking, so it will cut down on how often you need to vacuum.

The lid swivels open for easy cleaning, and it’s designed in such a way that any litter on top of the lid will fall back into the box rather than on your carpet.

The box is made to accommodate reusable liners, which are tear-resistant and capable of lasting up to 3 months. Replacing them will give you an additional expense, of course, but it also ensures that your cats will always have the cleanest possible bathroom to use.

It comes with a scoop, but the only place to attach it is outside the box. This defeats the purpose of some of the anti-tracking measures used elsewhere, as litter will simply fall off the scoop onto your floor.

But if you want a litter box that may actually improve the look of your home, rather than detract from it, the sleek Modkat Top-Entry should be your first choice.

    Pros
    • Attractive and stylish
    • Top-entry design reduces litter tracking
    • Lid swivels open for easy cleaning
    • Reusable liners ensure that the bathroom will be as clean as possible for your cats
    Cons
    • Having to replace liners adds an extra expense
    • Scoop attaches to outside of box, causing litter to fall on floor

    5. Petmate Booda Dome Clean Step Cat Litter Box

Petmate Booda Dome Clean Step Cat Litter Box_Amazon

No one will ever accuse the Petmate Booda Dome Clean Step Cat Litter Box of being subtle, as this massive option will take up an entire corner in one room of your house. The upshot is that your cats will have a ton of privacy when it’s their turn to use the facilities.

It has several steps leading from the floor to the litter pan. Not only do these steps make it easily accessible for senior cats, but they also help cut down on litter tracking.

If you have dogs, the dome will prevent them from taking the opportunity to eat a little cat poop. It also helps contain odors.

It’s not ideal if your cats sometimes have issues with their aim, however. If any pee misses the litter, it will run right down the dome onto your floor. Cleaning it can be a pain as well, as it’s unwieldy to move.

The Petmate Booda Dome is great for giving your cats more room to do their business, but it’s not quite on the same level as some other models.

    Pros
    • Gives cats plenty of privacy
    • Prevents dogs from eating cat waste
    • Easy for senior cats to enter and exit
    • Steps cut down on litter tracking
    Cons
    • Takes up a ton of room
    • Unwieldy to clean
    • Can create a mess if cats miss their target while peeing
    • Takes up a ton of room
    • Unwieldy to clean
    • Can create a mess if cats miss their target while peeing

    6. Petphabet Jumbo Covered Cat Litter Box

    Petphabet Covered Litter Box_Amazon

If your cats have boundary issues, two of them can fit in the Petphabet Jumbo Covered Cat Litter Box at the same time. This can help cut down on accidents if one cat takes forever while another needs to go. It also eliminates the need to have multiple boxes in the same room.

The clear lid makes it easy to see what’s going on inside, so if any of your cats like to hide in the litter box, you can have eyes on them. It also lets your cats know if there’s another kitty inside, which can cut down on incidents if one cat tends to be aggressive when surprised.

It’s not that durable, though, so don’t expect it to last forever (especially if you drop it). The box is also curved, making it difficult to get a straight scoop into it.

The lid doesn’t fit on the base that well, and that can lead to spray escaping the box. It’s also hard to work the clasps.

The Petphabet Jumbo is a cleverly designed box that will be perfect for certain situations. It’s not the best that we’ve found overall, though.

    Pros
    • Room for two cats at once
    • Clear lid lets cats know if it’s occupied
    • Eliminates the need for multiple boxes in one room
    • Makes it easy to find cats hiding inside
    Cons
    • Not that durable
    • Hard to clean with a straight scoop
    • Lid doesn’t fit base well
    • Clasps are hard to work

    7. Petmate Top Entry Cat Litter Pan

    Petmate Top Entry Litter Pan_Amazon

The Petmate Top Entry Cat Litter Pan is an option designed for reducing litter waste, as your cats simply enter from the top, leaving any stray litter behind when they jump out.

It’s not much to look at, so you’ll likely want to hide it in a bathroom or someplace like that, but it’s roomy — on the inside, at least.

Getting in the thing might be a bit of a chore, especially if you have a chubby cat, as the hole on top isn’t the widest. Older cats or those with arthritis might have issues getting on top as well.

The interior has a spot with a handle where litter tends to clump. This can be annoying to clean — and it also encourages you to buy the company’s special liners.

The hinged top makes it easy for you to get into it when it’s time to clean it, though, so you won’t have to contort yourself to tidy things up.

The Petmate Top Entry is a good litter box, but it won’t be a great fit for certain cats.

    Pros
    • Reduces tracked litter
    • Roomy on the inside
    • Hinged top grants easy access
    Cons
    • Hole may be hard for pudgy cats to get through
    • Older cats may have trouble jumping in and out of it
    • Design encourages the purchase of litter liners
    • Not particularly attractive

    8. Dymoll Foldable Cat Litter Box

Dymoll Cat Litter BoxDymoll Cat Litter Box_Amazon

The Dymoll Foldable Cat Litter Box has a clever design intended to reduce litter tracking, and it’s one of the more unique models on the market today. That uniqueness works against it as often as it sets it apart, however.

The box has a two-way entry, one-way exit system in which cats can enter from the door on the front, but they can’t leave that way — they have to jump out the top instead. This makes it easy to access, while also preventing litter from leaving with your kitty.

Unfortunately, that can be confusing for some cats, so expect a learning curve. It can also create a traffic jam if two cats try to use the box simultaneously.

That shouldn’t be an issue that often, as the clear door will let your cats know if the bathroom is occupied. There’s only room inside for one cat at a time, however, so if you have pushy pets, this may not work for you.

The foldable design is intended to make it easy for travel use, but that’s not a helpful feature. What it does instead is make it difficult to align everything perfectly, which can cause issues with litter leakage once your cats give it a try.

The Dymoll Foldable is unlike any litter box that we’ve seen, but we’re not sure if that’s a good thing or not.

    Pros
    • Special two-way entry, one-way exit system reduces litter tracking
    • Clear door lets cats know if it’s in use
    Cons
    • Might be confusing to some cats
    • Only room for one pet inside
    • Can create a traffic jam if cats try to use it at same time
    • Foldable design makes it hard to align lid with base

    9. Omega Paw NRA15-1 Roll ‘n Clean Self-Cleaning Litter Box

    Omega Paw NRA15-1 litter box_Amazon

The Omega Paw NRA15-1 Roll ‘n Clean Self-Cleaning Litter Box makes scooping litter incredibly easy, so no matter how many cats have used the box recently, you can have it fresh and ready to go in seconds.

All you do is roll the entire box over on its back; the litter will then fall through a sifting grate, leaving the mess trapped in the pull-out tray for easy disposal.

Of course, if your cats pee on the grate itself, litter will simply clump to it rather than fall through. You’ll still usually need to do a bit of scooping, which nearly defeats the purpose of the whole thing.

While it’s easy to clean up after multiple cats, they’ll have to use the box one at a time because it’s cramped inside.

Worst of all, if you don’t attach the top to the base perfectly, litter will fall out when you flip it over. That can make it scary to turn it over, as you never know when you’ll have a mess on your hands (and your carpet).

The Omega Paw Roll n’ Clean is a smart idea, but the manufacturer still needs to iron out a few kinks before it will be truly ready.

    Pros
    • Makes it easy to clean up after multiple cats
    • Cuts down on scooping significantly
    Cons
    • Some scooping still required
    • Won’t work if cats pee on grate
    • Cramped interior
    • Litter falls out if top is not perfectly aligned with base

    10. Nature’s Miracle Multi-Cat Self-Cleaning Litter Box

Nature's Miracle multi cat litter box_Amazon

The Nature’s Miracle Multi-Cat Self-Cleaning Litter Box is a self-cleaning model, so you shouldn’t have to worry about doing much scooping. It’s a fantastic time-saver — when it works, anyway.

It tends to jam frequently, especially if it gets used frequently. That’s an issue if you have multiple cats, so expect to clear the jam several times a week. Urine is especially likely to gum up the works, and cats pee more than they poop, so that’s a problem.

The multi-cat design seems poorly thought out as well. The box area is large, presumably to accommodate multiple cats at once. But cats rarely use the bathroom at the same time — what you really want is an extra-large disposal box, and this one doesn’t have that.

That’s especially troublesome because of how big and expensive this thing is. If you’re going to drop that much money on something and dedicate an entire corner of a room to it, you want it to work flawlessly, and this machine isn’t there yet.

As long as it’s working properly, though, you’ll think that it’s a dream come true. If the company makes a few improvements, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Nature’s Miracle Multi-Cat rockets up this list in the years to come.

    Pros
    • Works extremely well when functioning properly
    Cons
    • Jams frequently
    • Has trouble raking urine clumps
    • Disposal box isn’t that big
    • Expensive
    • Takes up a great deal of space

Buyer’s Guide: Purchasing the Best Litter Box for Mulitple Cats

You wouldn’t believe that there would be much to think about when buying a litter box, but once you see all the options on the market, you might feel overwhelmed. This guide will let you know which questions to ask, so you have the best odds of coming home with the perfect box for all your cats.

What Should You Look For in a Litter Box?

Frisco High Sided Cat Litter Box II_Chewy

The most important thing is to find one that your cats will use — meaning it’s one that they know how to use, aren’t afraid of, and can enter and exit with ease. If you have a cat with mobility issues, you’ll want to make sure that it’s easy for them to get in and out of it without causing pain.

You’ll also want to be sure it’s easy to clean. That means that you can get to it easily when it’s time to scoop it out, that nothing clumps in hard-to-reach places, and that any accidents are easy to wipe off.

Since this list is geared toward boxes that can handle multiple cats, you’ll want to make sure it’s roomy enough to handle all the waste that your cats produce. That usually means a large pan and deposit box, but you can get by going smaller on both if you clean it out every day.

Boxes come in all shapes and sizes, so you’ll want to find one that fits nicely in your home as well. Some can easily be stashed away in a corner or behind your own toilet, but some are so massive that they dominate a room. This may be a tradeoff that you need to make to accommodate multiple cats, though.

Finally, consider any special circumstances that you may have. For example, if you have a dog that likes to dig through the box for snacks, you’ll want one with a secure lid. If you hate litter being tracked through your house, you should get one that cuts down on the amount that escapes. This is something that you’ll have to consider on your own before you start shopping.

Do I Really Need a Special Box for Multiple Cats?

    Booda cat litter box_Chewy

No, you don’t need one, but it can certainly make your life more convenient.

If you don’t get a litter box that can accommodate multiple cats, you’ll need to clean it every single day, without exception. Otherwise, a regular box will quickly overflow with waste. Not only is this gross to have in your house, but it can also make your cat more susceptible to disease.

Boxes for multiple cats are usually larger than regular boxes, which gives you a bit of leeway when it comes to cleaning them out. Some are even big enough for two or more cats to use the bathroom at the same time, but that’s not necessarily something that you should be concerned about.

Having a cat means dealing with occasional bad smells and messes. You can make that job easier with a great litter additive like Hepper's Advanced Bio-Enzyme Cat Litter Deodorizer, a natural product that uses bio-enzymes to eliminate odors.

Hepper Advanced Bio-Enzyme Cat Litter Deodorizer Powder

At Pet Keen, we've admired Hepper for many years, and decided to take a controlling ownership interest so that we could benefit from the outstanding designs of this cool company!

    Final Thoughts

The Catit Jumbo is our favorite litter box for multiple cats because it gives whoever’s inside plenty of privacy. It’s quite roomy and easy to clean as well.

If you want a barebones model instead, try the Frisco High-Sided. Made of thick and durable plastic, it has tall walls that keep litter inside while also giving all your cats plenty of space to do their business.

Your cats deserve the best when it comes to taking care of their poop, and you deserve a box that will allow you to keep cats without having your house smell like a zoo.

Each box covered in these reviews will be fantastic for both you and your pets, ensuring that your house stays clean and smells sweet.
